And they're not Swedish, so who knows if they even have to do that... For my country you don't need to go through all that hassle applying at home. You don't need to "register to leave the country ", I'm kind of surprised Sweden even does that, sounds like an old soviet bloc type practice!!!!

Normally is not a hassle.

Why is it a soviet thing to tell your country you moved?

Soviet?? Lol

Of course I'll let my country know I moved. Now I only pay tax in the US. If the Swedish tax agency thought I lived there I'd pay tax there too!

It's got nothing to do with Soviet! That comment was so funny I actually did LOL

Exactly, I was very chocked too. Why would I not want to tell my country I moved? I don't want to have to pay taxes in two countries lol. And if I don't tell them I've moved how am I going to get voting information sent home to me so I can still vote in elections? :P Don't know how making it easier for myself makes it Soviet-ish?

To the OP: Get a new passport while you're still in your country. The Green Card is not like a visa, it's not glued into the passport, it's an actual card.

Lol, there is a difference between being a non-resident for tax purposes and "registering" to have moved. The mere fact that you had to jump through such hoops to prove you're still a citizen is evidence of that ... Most countries I'm aware of just require proof to the tax authorities and it doesn't create the kind of hassle with passport application that was complained about here!!!

If you think sending a notice to the tax agency saying you moved is registering then ok we are guilty lol

Showing proof of foreign residence for 6 months plus one day of the year is all that my tax agency requires. And no one has to do anything special to get a passport back home!! If you want to vote while out the country you just register to vote at the relevant embassy:consulate. I never thought I would find a western country with more hoops to jump through than we have but seems I was wrong :D

Only reason I had to do it was because I have been living in the US for the last 4 years and the process had gone way quicker if I wasn't in the middle of AOS meaning no Green Card, luckily my K1 visa was not expired. I don't have to prove anything. I fill in a form one time saying bye bye Sweden and then I'm done. I don't even have to register to vote, a letter comes home saying welcome to the embassy to vote and it tells me the deadline before they send the results to Sweden. That just made it sound like you did more hoops...

Oh well, I think we should stick to the OP's subject before this thread gets either closed or many posts will be removed.

How strange that when two people "register to leave", one person has to jump through hoops to prove they are still a citizen to get a passport but another just gets voting material automatically, which must presume they are a citizen. Something doesn't quite add up.

Yes to get back to the OP's original question, they are not from Sweden so dire warnings about proving citizenship for a passport are irrelevant.

You completely missed the point but sure if that's what you think...

But it can also be a pain to do it in your home country. I went to get a new passport yesterday and as I am registered as having left the country I had to fill in a form to prove I'm still a Swedish citizen. Normally the process of getting a new passport takes minutes. Mine took 2 hours including wait time at the police station and the office were I needed to get our version of a birth certificate with my new and maiden name.

This is the point I responded to but apparently missed? Lol

Okay this discussion has gone way off topic and we're not helping the OP with our bickering. I have given the advice to the OP in previous posts: he can either let it be or renew before the interview, it's up to him. This is my last post on this subject.
