I met my fiancee online. She obtained a tourist visa on her first attempt (6 month visa with re-entry!) and stayed with me a few weeks.
We got engaged in the US and then she returned to her country.

I'm filling out I-I129F and am concerned about question 34.a. Her tourist visa was presumably approved because she stated the purpose of her visit was tourism and shopping. She did not disclose our relationship to the interviewing officer.

Will there be any issues getting the I-I29F approved if question 34.a states we met online and then met in person while she traveled as a tourist? I'm worried that the chronology will raise questions about the true intentions when she traveled on the tourist visa. Thanks in advance for any insights.

She did plenty of shopping. But the I-129F will state we met one another online prior to her tourist visa. I believe the tourist visa interview involved some written or verbal statement that she did not know anyone in the US. I'm not sure because I wasn't present and she doesn't remember with certainty.

Here's how I see it, and if I'm wrong, someone will come around and correct me. If she only knew you in the States, she didn't know anyone, because she never actually met you. I have several online friends that I don't really know. I only know their online personas.

And make sure when you fill out the part about meeting online, that you name the site, declare it is not a marriage broker site, and show the terms of service for that site which spells out that it isn't a marriage broker site.

I always state to the officer when I drive across the border that I am visiting my fiancé. I recently checked my I-94 for the first time and all of my US entries are still shown as entering the US as a tourist. I don't think it will be a problem.

34a is about when you met in person. USCIS doesn't care how you two made initial contact. That will be probably asked at the interview stage. As pythos noted, by saying you met online, you might get a RFE if you don't make it clear it was not a marriage broker. I'd just keep it simple ("We met when she came to the USA in _____").
