Hi all!! I got here in the US with a K1 visa along with my K2. I'm currently 9weeks pregnant and I don't have any insurance yet. My husband couldn't add me to his insurance before and now he doesn't even have his own due to changing jobs. I had SSN before from my J1 visa but the office took it when we tried to change my name on it prior to applying AOS. They said they'll try to change it but was having problems so right now i don't have my card and i don't even know if i can use it. Anyway, when we found out, we went to the health department (kentucky) to go get checked. They gave us temporary medical card that will last until sept 30 and they said to go to medicaid and apply for help since my husband is currently not earning enough. But unfortunately, medicaid denied us because I'm not a resident yet (but not illegal) and they would need my green card. So that was off our options. We are willing to pay for private insurance that will help us with this pregnancy. We are currently fixing all our papers and will apply for AOS hopefully within this week or next week. Has anyone ever been in the same situation? What type of insurance will accept us with no SSN? What's our best option? I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you all so much in advance :)

Your social security number will not change with your name change, so if you know the number, it can be used.

You have a social security number, it never changes. Hopefully you know it.

I still know my social security number since it was on the papers from filing my K1 Visa. The guy who we talked to in the SS office here in KY said he's not sure how to handle changing names as it was the first time he encountered it. He said he can maybe try to give me a new number which i think is ridiculous. He said he's really not sure so he took my card and said he'll contact the uscis or dhs or whichever he needs to talk to. That is why I'm kinda confused and hesitant to still use my number., so whenever someone asks for it like the health dept i just tell them they took it back for some reasons. Edited by francine27

Your SSN is yours for life. You can use that same number you were issued before for anything that asks for your SSN, including your health insurance.

You should go back to the Social Security office and speak to a supervisor. There's a form for changing your name on your Social Security card. You submit the form and your new card should be sent to you in a couple of weeks. Your Social Security number will be the same number.

Once you file to AOS you can get Obamacare.

Go see a supervisor. Changing your SSN is not only impossible, its illegal lol. The fact that he even offered that is a problem. Even if he does research what to do (and it is a simple form and entry into the system), it might be incorrect. Save yourself the headache in the long run and go to the supervisor now.

And how is it that hes never had to do that before? Was it his first day? People get married and change their name all the time....
