Just a general question. My wife wants go go back home for a few weeks to visit her family in Vietnam. Will she encounter and problems there, coming in or departing Vietnam? She still has her Vietnamese passport and her EAD/AP card for the US. It has been a year since she left to come here. I just wanted to know if they might give her a hard time due to she left with a K1 visa to the US.

Thanks

We need more info. Does she have AOS approved yet or still pending? K1 visa is a one-time visa and it has been canceled upon her entry of US so she cannot reenter with K-1 visa. If AOS is still pending she needs to have a valid EAD/AP combo card to enter US after visiting VN.

If she is going back by herself she MAY get hassled by customs in Vietnam, especially if she is bringing tablets/smartphones as gifts. VN has been restricting these and charging duties. Back in MAy my wife and I went to Vietnam and the customs guy told us that we were only allowed 1 tablet and 1 phone for each of us but my gut feeling at the time was that if I had not been with her, the guy at customs would have tried a shakedown. When I came forward and said I was her husband and answered some of his questions in Vietnamese his attitude changed from stern to friendly very quick. Not sure if that helps you or not, just my personal experience

She's entering as a VN citizen. She knows the shakedowns better than you. In light of the emphasis on being tourist friendly she shouldn't be hassled too much. Recently they have been looking at how many phones and computers people are bringing in as gifts. Also some crazy items like erasable pens (sounds foolish but it was big news a few months ago).
