He can go ahead and apply for an SSN, however, the SSN will only be given if he has a reason why he needs his SSN. Basically, unless you have work authorization, you have to give a reason why you need an SSN now. By the way, they are kinda picky about giving you an SSN without work authorization.

Go there ^^. It explains it a little more.

WRONG.

A K-1 visa holder does not need a reason for needing an SSN, because they are classified as a LEGAL ALIEN ALLOWED TO WORK. You can reference this and scroll down to where it says K-1 for verification: https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211530

Yes, now you're going through a whole new process and you need to submit a copy of your birth certificate once again.

Why can't they get their SSN? Their i-94 isn't expired yet. Wouldn't they just need to go to their local ssa office?

Documents expiring within 14 days cannot be used. It is too late to use their I-94, so they need to wait for the EAD. > https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211135

im not aware about it...but i will try to go to the local office here to see coz for now am on working on my papers aos...but i dont know jow can i fill up yhe for i 131...for the travel..coz am not planning to travel yet...

No explanation or reason is needed when filing the I-131 with a pending I-485 as an adjustment applicant.

An adjustment applicant does not fill out Part 4 stating a reason and purpose of their travels, and you do not need to supply the extra statement.

Leave date and length blank, then hand-write Unknown for those after printing out the form.

No. A K-1 entrant most certainly is allowed to obtain an SSN. They do not need to have the EAD first or explain why they need it. A K-1 is categorized as a legal alien allowed to work. They get an SSN with a stipulation printed on it that it is only valid for work with DHS authorization. The EAD will be that authorization. They need both to work legally, but they are eligible to receive the SSN right after entry to the US via the K-1.

Yes, as the I-485 instructions state. You need the birth certificate plus an English translation of it.

http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-485instr.pdf

Any document submitted to USCIS with

information in a foreign language must be accompanied by a

full English translation.

...

Submit a copy of your foreign birth certificate or other

record of your birth that meets the provisions of

secondary evidence found in Title 8, Code of Federal

Regulations (CFR), 103.2(b)(2).
