What to do after POE on a K1 visa?

Hi all,

I just arrived into the USA on the 27th of this month on a K1 visa and was wondering what to do next?

My fiancé and I are having our wedding in November and I know we need to file our marriage cert etc then before my 3 months is up.

I was wondering is there a step to do like Adjustment of Status, Early Parole etc before marriage?? or do we do all this after??

If anyone can provide me a step-by-step link that indicates what to do that would be so helpful.

Also, at my POE in DFW Airport, they kept the stuff that is inside the yellow envelope - that is correct right as it gets sent to the USCIS?

You can start on the paperwork now, and file after you're married and have the certified marriage certificate.

Follow this guide for getting the SSN > http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

The fees are listed here > http://www.uscis.gov/i-485

The fees for the I-765(EAD-work authorization) and I-131(AP-advance parole for travel) are waived when filed with a pending I-485, so include both of those too. It takes about 60-90 days to receive the EAD/AP combo card, which will allow you to work(along with an SSN) and re-enter the US when traveling abroad while waiting for the green card approval.

You need all the supporting documents for each form as well, so read the instructions for each one. You can also search here on VJ for what to include with each form if you get stumped. There are also example forms here on VJ you can look at when filling out the forms. They can be helpful.

Just one clarification since you have already received very good answers so far. There is no deadline for filing the AOS package. Most file soon after marriage if they can afford it, but there is no set time requirement. The only time requirement you now have is to get married within the 90 day window. I suggest you follow the advice already offered, relax, and have a wonderful wedding day!

Just another quick question - not sure if anyone would know this.... but I lived in the USA for a year in 2013 on a J1 work and travel visa and had a social security number back then but it was a conditional one Im pretty sure.

Do I just renew it or get a completely whole new one?

The number will be the same, but you can go to the SSA and update your status/change your name on it(if you changed it through marriage). Take your marriage certificate, passport, SS card and I-94.
