It is funny in the sense it is ridiculous, really. There are many Germans and Japanese whose relatives and grand-relatives fought in wars who don't feel much pride in the Nazi or Imperial flag. I will believe in Confederate pride when these proud southerners start talking about reparations for all the damage their grand-relatives did. There is nothing to be proud of about slavery and the ways of the south but that is a personal choice. As a symbol, the confederate flag does not belong in our public of government buildings. In fact, when you think of it, the confederate flag stands against everything America stands for. It was way overdue that some governors did something about it.

Having said that it is upon us to remind all those who feel they should be proud of the confederacy that they really need to rethink their position for their pride supports bigotry, hatred and values that have no place in our society.

I don't know why you think it is funny. Perhaps there are people whose grand-relatives fought and or died in that war, and it has meaning for them. I have noticed that US veterans today seem to be pretty proud of the US flag. As do people from other countries their own flags (just guessing here). There are also some who happen to venerate the pride flag. I also don't think that is funny.

It's not clear for those who have never bothered to read or learn about American history, as evidence by some of the comments here...

It is very clear why the Confederacy was formed and why the Civil War was started: Slavery.

Again I don't care if people own Confederate Flags just don't display them on public lands and don't called yourself a patriot of the U.S. if you own and hold the confederate flag so dearly.

Logically the Confederates were very different than the Nazis or Imperial Japan though. Whereas the latter invaded and expanded territories, the Confederates were fighting a defensive war. They needed to win enough decisive battles that the Union would give up and let them be. So to mention things like reparations is a bit silly when most of the damage done occurred to southern infrastructure.

I agree that the modern use of the flag came out of the Jim Crow days, but at the same time I can tell most people are looking at the situation outside the historical perspective. You cannot look at history without that context. I think I've brought this up with you before.

Agreed. They should get an education and find out more before going around professing their pride...
