I've been confused how the police certificates work. My gf lived in the USA while an intern. She stayed almost a year and a half. She is from Hungary. Does she need a police certificate from Hungary and the USA or only from Hungary? It's my understanding that she will only need a Hungarian one as the USA gets a certificate on its own. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks in advance!

Yes, she'll only need one from Hungary. The DHS will do their own background check since you need to disclose all previous addresses when completing the DS-260 so it is not necessary for her to obtain a US police certificate.

Yes, she is only going to need one from Hungary. Makes sure you state it is for an American immigrant visa when you request it, as it contains slightly different information, and that is what the embassy needs. I had to request a second one because the "generic" one was not sufficient.

Yes, only for Hungary as explained in the first answer. Country specific instructions can be found here. http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/fees/reciprocity-by-country.html Just enter the country name.

If she studied in another country for over a year is she also required to get a certificate from that country?

Yes, any country where she's lived for more than one year, she'll need a police certificate.
