I'm wondering the best way to transfer my savings to the U.S.

I can exchange it for cash and bring it on the plane- but I'd prefer to electronically transfer.

If you can share your experience I'd just like to get a sense of the most popular ways to go about this.

NAB do a travellers card which you can load up and then use like a debit card in the U.S. If you have internet banking you can reload it if need be from your Australian bank account, you can load with either US dollars or Australian. The exchange rate is very competitive and it saves you carrying a lot of cash around on you.

Western Union charges money to send, then charges money to receive, then charges money to exchange currency. I use it all the time to send money to my fiancee, but I wouldn't do it to move my own money from myself to myself. Their exchange rate isn't as good as other exchange rates available, and there are the multiple charges on top of it.

I would suggest going outside the wire transfer business to find better exchanges. For example, when I went to the Philippines, I got a better exchange than Western Union from the money exchange in the Manila airport, and a better exchange than the airport in the malls. I would believe banks would likely be better than transfer companies, but that's only my belief.
