No. You show up at the USCIS office and will show them the appointment letter and ID(passport works for foreign spouse, license for USC) to get in the building. She changed her name through marriage, so bring a copy of the marriage certificate too. Some get asked for it, and some don't. For biometrics there is a short form to fill out with height/weight stuff and then they will call you. You get your photo taken and fingerprinted. That is all there is to it. How long the wait is inside, will depend on how busy they are. For us, we were always called fairly quickly.

That's good to hear, thanks! That'd be nice to knock it out ASAP in the morning and enjoy the rest of the day as vacation like you recommended.

We got our paper NOA1's in the mail today!

NExt step is waiting for the unflexible biometrics appointment letter, lol.

Also, probably a stupid, repetitive question, but Danielle's visa / I-94 expires middle of October. Do we need to file for an extension of sorts? I understand once our AOS case is "pending", she is legal to stay here, but what official paperwork do we have to show that it's "pending". The I-797 just kind of says they received the case.

You do not have to do anything with the I-94.

Thanks for the quick reply! So then like how do we know Danielle is legal to stay here while the case is "pending"? Is there some documentation somewhere? Also, will there be some type of document we'll have to kind of confirm this? It just adds a little piece of mind, that's why I am asking.

The I-485 receipt is enough.

Would that be our I-797 for that, which we received today?

Yeah, it should be what you received today. Isn't it an I-797C?

Correct. Just those letters often have that disclaimer on the top saying the don't really mean legal immigration and whatnot.

Yes but they're proof that your fiance is on her way of getting legal status. I have not encountered anyone who's had to prove her legal status while waiting for AOS so I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Thanks, that makes me less nervous. It's just I see the expiration date on her visa and get all these crazy "what-ifs" in my head and all day, so I look for peace of mind wherever I can. I guess now we just are waiting for that letter, which I hope we have it before October 30th, because we do have plans that night. Also, when going to the biometrics appointment at the USCIS office, you've told me how the process is different, but is it similar to like the K-1 interview at the consulate where they don't allow you to bring in anything really to the building? Like cell phones, purses, bags, etc. Also, am I allowed to come with Danielle into the appointment?

Yeah this process can make a bit crazy :P The biometrics is not like the interview thought there are things she can't bring but they're kind of obvious. She will go through kind of like an airport security check just like for the interview though she is allowed to bring in cellphone, purse etc. I don't see a reason why you should not be able to join her if you wish to do so :)

Are the biometrics appointments anything like the K-1 interviews in the sense that everyone on that day has to line up and there's a line around the corner of the building if you sdon't show up an hour early?

Biometrics is actually so quick and easy, of course relative to how busy your local USCIS office is.

When my wife went to her biometrics, there was no one else there. Went up to the guard at the desk, gave him her appt notice and he gave her a form to fill out. It's a quick form that asks you to fill out basic information. When she was done she gave the form back to the guard, and immediately she was called back. From what I could see she had a digital photo taken, some fingerprints, and she had to verify information on a screen. Then she was given a comment card to fill out. We were there less than 5 minutes.

Thanks all, that helps. I'd go with her since I am driving us there and we are thinking of the hotel that's a minute walk away from the office. I am wondering if we need to line up outside 45 minutes early in order to not be there all day (like Danielle said was the case an the Montreal Consulate). It does piss me off extremely it's a 3 hour drive for a 5 minute appointment, but I guess we'll just have to make lemonade and turn it into some pseudo-honeymoon since we really can't go on an actual one.

No. You will have a scheduled appointment time. There should be no reason to be there 45 minutes early, and no waiting in a line that long in order to get in. It is not like going to the consulates abroad for a visa interview. You can always check the reviews for your USCIS office too. Just select your local office > http://www.visajourney.com/reviews/
