I recently lost my Green Card and am in the process of replacing it. I just looked now and say that it can take up to 6 months to get a replacement. The problem is I have a trip already booked in a couple of months, and it looks unlikely I will receive a new one in time. The trip is non refundable and I really dont want to throw all that money away.I looked and what i found seems to indicate that what i need is a I-551 stamp in my passport. Am i correct in this assumption. If so what documents do I need, what do i have to do to get the I-551 stamp. How long does it take? is there a fee? Is it possible I will be rejected?

Yes, the I-551 will act as your green card. You can schedule an InfoPass appointment to receive the I-551 stamp. https://infopass.uscis.gov/

You'll need:

1. Valid passport

2. Form I-90 receipt notice (you say you're in the process of replacing it)

3. Copy of lost green card (if you have a copy)

4. Documents evidencing the need for the stamp (i.e. flight itinerary)

The infoPass appointment shouldn't take long and it is free. The officer will stamp your passport right then and there and I doubt you'll get rejected if you just bring the evidence.

Biometrics isn't necessary but they may reduce the validity date of the I-551 stamp. If you've received an ASC notice, you should take that as well.

ASC Notice contains information about where to do your biometrics and fingerprinting. If you've received that notice, then you should bring it along as well.
