United Airlines Cancellation Free? - Avoiding Complications to AOS

 Share

Hi world trotters,

Does anyone know if cancelling United Airlines flight is free?

I bought a round ticket for K-1 POS because it was 5 times cheaper.

I made a mistake and bought one with the return potion by United.

I read some horror stories here about complications to AOS process if you don't cancel the return flight.

Researched many hours on the web but not info found to clarify if it's free(with no refund) or not.

Some reviews say cancellation cost means no-refund.

I just want to cancel without any additional fees. If they charge additional, it will be 400.

I don't mind the amount. I mind paying again for a product I already bought on the ground that it wasn't used.

It doesn't seem to be a good idea to take a chance of no-show.

The "within-24-hours-of-booking-no-cancellation-fee" doesn't apply anymore.

Called the airline. They were extremely rude and didn't give any answer after interrogation.

They(she) started to shout.... wow!

Anyway,

Thanks for your help & advice !!!

You will not be able to get a refund, but you can definitely call and say you won't be able to make the flight. They should be happy that you even called, so they can release your seat to someone else and get paid again. I usually hang up on rude reps and re-dial until I hear a pleasant voice. Don't worry, it was just one agent. You are only required payment if you are changing flights for another date.

Thanks Pishi Pishi,

I think in most cases what you say is true.

I've read a post here on VJ on this topic that someone COULDN'T CANCEL her flight even though she asked.

The representative just told the customer to pay more to change the flight schedule. Don't know which airline it was.

I think it's this thread...

AOS denial: USCIS said i left the country but i did not

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/387716-aos-denial-uscis-said-i-left-the-country-but-i-did-not/

I really regret booking UAL.

Never encountered a rude customer service like this at home or in Europe... Is this a norm with US businesses?

Thanks for your encouragement. Really glad to read :star:

Thanks Transborder,

I hope my path will be smooth like you.

I might even marry in court on the day of the flight to prove my presence ; )

Mine is a low-price ticket. The rep on the phone seemed very upset about that and started to interrogate.

What is wrong about controlling my budget?

If it's 4000 dollars cheaper, who wouldn't choose it?

:)

It's the other way around for me, I have encountered rude European airline agents instead of American agents.

I had huge problems canceling the return trip, they said several times it was canceled but they didn't. Finally they did.

Getting a refund from Turkish Airline was mind blowing wasted time. Totally incompetent employees.

If you encounter a rude employee here then ask for the supervisor and file a complaint.

i say keep using the phone to get to the right human.

Let's assume that the first person that answers the phone is never the right person you need,

so when you call back,

ask for a supervisor,

telling the supevisor you want to cancel the return portion of yer ticket. Usually, folk there are trained to listen about cancellations and go immediately on to rebuttal mode, rebuttal against receiving a partial refund,

but

you aren't chasing a partial refund here...

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

This also depends on if you booked it directly through United or through a third party site.

Yes, I booked through a third-party agent.

So there's always a chance the airline charge me later the list price.

Before booking I called the first airline that handles the outbound leg. They unofficially confirmed they won't charge extra fee even the ticket wasn't fully used.

I wasn't careful enough to notice there was another code-share airline involved.

But I think it's shameful that an airline can have its own way to impose a rule to consumers that totally run against how market works, in order to squeeze every penny out from customers, and threaten to do it on the phone.

Thanks, that's the way you do it.

I noticed the service people get into belligerent mode so quickly. Good training!

I'll just fly and keep my fingers crossed God won't make them charge me outrageous extra...

I'm giving a new coat and other nice clothes to an Bangladeshi student here, so that God will take into account my good deeds...... :star:

(well I was planning to, anyway)

Thanks Ebunoluwa,

and sorry you had to go through a lot of trouble.

People, watch out for Turkish Airlines!
