Hey all,

I've been looking over these forums for a couple of months now and I;m going to apply for the DV-2017 lottery (granted if it's still open) an I'm curious as to how the case numbers work. My region is North America (Bahamas) and for the past couple of years, the cut off numbers barely pass 20.

I know that 50,000 visas are allocated and the case number ranges anywhere but I haven't seen any posts from winners from my area so I'm curious as to their case numbers and if it's really that low that they get a chance to get the green card.

Also, the numbers seem to only progress up by one a month. Why is that so? Are different regions allocated (in this instance Bahamas) a smaller amount of visas than others and is so why? Also, based on that how does it affect the case number, is it by region or based on all eligible countries?

I'm just trying to get as much info as possible for when I win ( throwing out positive outcomes only guys) so that I'm fully prepared and not mess up my chances and I can help others out there especially from my region.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Selection is random, so the number of selectees from a particular country is ( roughly) proportional to the number of entrants from that country. Countries with small populations who don't have a lot of entries - like Bahamas - therefore tend to have a handful of selectees. Some countries are so small and/or have so few entrants that there are some years they get no selectees at all.

The numbers for North America do go up slowly, but that's because they are so small to start with. Like other regions, North American selectees also have their interviews spread throughout the fiscal year! So if there are only say 20 selectees, they will only go up by say 1 or 2 a month, whereas for example 20000 selectees total would go up 1000 or 2000 a month...similar kind of proportion.

Hope that helps explain it?
