Sex = sin? That's one of the most powerful myths of religion.

Sex is not a sin, but fornication is, that is sex before marriage . Also, sex outside of marriage is called adultery. And it is also one of the commandments, so consider that a sin, too . Otherwise, God created sex to be a beautiful thing between a man and a woman. For a clearer understanding of this, you might want to read Genesis chapter 3 .

I always find it hard to believe that anyone still buys the suppressive thinking that is 'sex before marriage is a sin' . I understand why religion finds it useful to promote this idea, but not why modern people accept this as some kind of 'fact'.

I think if the Bible or Qu'ran or any other book were written today, sex before marriage would be even more forbidden than it was then. Like how some religions aren't supposed to eat pork, and this is most likely due to the fact that pork used to carry parasites (i.e. unclean), it became taboo. Now that sex carries a lot more risk of disease, I'm assuming it would be even more taboo. Just a thought.

You could be right, although along with the risk of disease, people are far more equipped to prevent not only disease but also pregnancy if they practice safe sex.

Also, there is no equation that sex before marriage = promiscuity although that's one of the many propositions that pops up whenever this topic rears its head.

The sexual urge is a very powerful thing and one that the majority are going to feel throughout life. If one suggests that sex before marriage is sinful you have an almost certain guarentee that the majority of the population is going to be guilty of sin. How convenient is that?

That would be very difficult. However, if someone believes something they should at least have the means to explain why they believe it and why this belief is important. If they can't, this belief really doesn't make much sense.

I don't understand blind belief, that's for sure. No where else is it acceptable for people to just say, well, X said it was true that's good enough for me. To model your life on beliefs that don't make sense unless you believe in X is rather ludicrous.

There's nothing blind about my belief. That's a negative presumption that doesn't account for a human ability to see God as an asset and guide in your life rather than a bully and tyrant who sucks all the fun, growth and freedom of thought out of life.
