I went on to check the visa status and it told me to enter my DS-160 number. When I did this a NO STATUS flashed up and told me to contact consular office. There is a drop down guide on the status progression and under NO STATUS there is a link that takes you to a site for Non-Immigrant visa which asks you to create an account. I have no idea what this is and the step by step guide on the London embassy website says nothing about completing anything other than the DS-160. Thanks

You use the Immigrant visa option from the drop down box and use the LND case number assigned by NVC to check the status of your case.

So after the ds-160 is filled out are we correct in thinking that there are no more forms to fill out and we just gather the info needed for the interview? Medical appointment is already scheduled

There is a Readiness for Interview form to submit online that lets them know you have every document and affidavit of support support in hand and the medical scheduled.

Once you've done the ds160 and scheduled your medical and you have all your documents asked for as per the instruction page then you need to send in your readiness form, which you will fine on the London Embassy website. Only after that, and when they have your medical results will they schedule you an interview. I have completed all those steps so I'm just waiting for my interview letter :)
