Can I apply for my SSN before I file the I-485 for my AOS? Has anyone Efiled the I-765 for K-1, is that a faster method than mailing it?

1. You can get your SSN prior to applying for your AOS/EAD (You need to do it within a certain number of days, but I have no idea what the exact number is).

2. You can apply for a temporary EAD based on your K-1 status (prior to filing your AOS), but it takes approximately 90 days to get and expires in 90 days, so there is no point in applying for it.

3. E filing doesn't seem any faster than regular filing.

4. You need to file your AOS in order to get an EAD based on your pending adjustment (the one that is good for a year). Most people file them at the same time.

I read through that, and also the applying for a SSN forum. I thought I read that as a k-1, I only needed a SSN to work not an EAD, something about how DHS would allow me to work without their approval.

i believe the number of days is 14 days prior to expiration of youur I-94 in order to get a ss#.

as long as your I-94 is valid and IF you can find an employer willing to hire you without any documentation that you are authorized to work, go for it, however once your I-94 expires you will no longer be authorized to work and will have to wait for the EAD for the authorization to resume.

So, as a K-1 holder, I can legally work with a I-94 and a SSN? When my I-94 expires, then I'll need an EAD to continue to work legally, unless my boss doesnt care. You'd thinkd that the US government would make working legally easier for us, considering working illegally, which most of us do, we don't claim out income on taxes...I wonder how much the US loses every year in tax revenue due to the complicity of loopty loops they put us through.

As a USC I take strong exception to your whimisical remark about "most of us do" with regard to working illegally! It's unfortunate to see you have such low regard for the laws of this country !

Many illegal workers in the US pay their taxes...lots and lots of them. The IRS doesn't care if they are illegal or not as long as they get their tax money.

IF you can get an employer to hire you WITHOUT the documentation to prove you're authorized, then it seems you can work legally. The clincher is finding an employer who will accept that.
