U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell says news of deplorable conditions at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington angers him and should anger everyone.

The freshman Democrat from Arizona says he intends to take a leading role in Congress in pushing for changes there.

Wounded U.S. troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan receive treatment at the medical center. A recent series of stories in the Washington Post described signs of neglect at a center outpatient facility, including mouse droppings, cockroaches, stained carpets and cheap mattresses.

Mitchell, chairman of the oversight and investigations subcommittee of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, already has asked for a joint hearing with the House Armed Services Oversight Committee on the issue.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates also has called for an investigation that would ensure that those responsible would be held accountable.

Sometime this week, Mitchell said he plans to pay a personal visit to the medical center.

As chairman of the oversight and investigations subcommittee, Mitchell said he wants a firsthand view. The other reason is more personal.

"I was told there is a former Tempe resident being treated there. And I intend to visit him," said the former Tempe mayor, who did not provide more details.

Mitchell said he's learned that similar conditions had been reported in the same rooms in the same building a couple of years ago.

"It doesn't sound like a matter of money. It sounds like a matter of bureaucracy and something systemic about the way things are operating there," Mitchell complained.

"I just think all citizens should be upset about this," he added. "When you have been over there (in Iraq or Afghanistan) and make sacrifices, then come back, you should not then get stuck in a room with roaches and mice and mold.

"I wonder how the other hospitals are operated?" asked Mitchell, signaling that his subcommittee may try to find out.
