Dear Senator Frist:

There is a huge amount of propaganda and myths circulating about illegal aliens, particularly illegal Mexican, Salvadorian, Guatemalan and Honduran aliens.

1. Illegal aliens generally do NOT want U.S. citizenship. Americans are very vain thinking that everybody in the world wants to be a U.S. citizen. Mexicans, and other nationalities want to remain citizens of their home countries while obtaining the benefits offered by the United States such as employment, medical care, in-state tuition, government subsidized housing and free education for their offspring. Their main attraction is employment and their loyalty usually remains at home. They want benefits earned and subsidized by middle class Americans. What illegal aliens want are benefits of American residence without paying the price.

2. There are no jobs that Americans won't do. Illegal aliens are doing jobs that Americans can't take and still support their families. Illegal aliens take low wage jobs, live dozens in a single residence home, share expenses and send money to their home country. There are no jobs that Americans won't do for a decent wage.

3. Every person who illegally entered this nation left a home. They are NOT homeless and they are NOT Americans. Some left jobs in their home countries. They come to send money to their real home as evidenced by the more than 20 billion dollars sent out of the country each year by illegal aliens. These illegal aliens knowingly and willfully entered this nation in violation of the law and therefore assumed the risk of detection and deportation. Those who brought their alien children assumed the responsibility and risk on behalf of their children.

4. Illegal aliens are NOT critical to the economy. Illegal aliens constitute less than 5% of the workforce. However, they reduce wages and benefits for lawful U.S. residents.

5. This is NOT an immigrant nation. There are 280 million native born Americans. While it is true that this nation was settled and founded by immigrants (legal immigrants), it is also true that there is not a nation on this planet that was not settled by immigrants at one time or another.

6. The United States is welcoming to legal immigrants. Illegal aliens are not immigrants by definition. The U.S. accepts more lawful immigrants every year than the rest of the world combined.

7. There is no such thing as the "Hispanic vote". Hispanics are white, brown, black and every shade in between. Hispanics are Republicans, Democrats, Anarchists, Communists, Marxists and Independents. The so-called "Hispanic vote" is a myth. Pandering to illegal aliens to get the Hispanic vote is a dead end.

8. Mexico is NOT a friend of the United States. Since 1848 Mexicans have resented the United States. During World War I Mexico allowed German Spies to operate freely in Mexico to spy on the U.S. During World War II Mexico allowed the Axis powers to spy on the U.S. from Mexico. During the Cold War Mexico allowed spies hostile to the U.S. to operate freely. The attack on the Twin Towers in 2001 was cheered and applauded all across Mexico. Today Mexican school children are taught that the U.S. stole California, Arizona, new Mexico and Texas. If you don't believe it, check out some Mexican textbooks written for their schoolchildren.

9. Although some illegal aliens enter this country for a better life, there are 6 billion people on this planet. At least 1 billion of those live on less than one dollar a day. If wanting a better life is a valid excuse to break the law and sneak into America, then let's allow those one billion to come to America and we'll turn the USA into a Third World nation overnight. Besides, there are 280 million native born Americans who want a better life. I'll bet Bill Gates and Donald Trump want a better life. When will the USA lifeboat be full? Since when is wanting a better life a good reason to trash another nation?

10. There is a labor shortage in this country. This is a lie. There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of American housewives, senior citizens, students, unemployed and underemployed who would gladly take jobs at a decent wage.

11. It is racist to want secure borders. What is racist about wanting secure borders and a secure America? What is racist about not wanting people to sneak into America and steal benefits we have set aside for legal aliens, senior citizens, children and other legal residents? What is it about race that entitles people to violate our laws, steal identities, and take the American Dream without paying the price?

For about four decades American politicians have refused to secure our borders and look after the welfare of middle class Americans. These politicians have been of both parties. A huge debt to American society has resulted. This debt will be satisfied and the interest will be high. There has already been riots in the streets by illegal aliens and their supporters. There will be more. You, as a politician, have a choice to offend the illegal aliens who have stolen into this country and demanded the rights afforded to U.S. citizens or to offend those of us who are stakeholders in this country. The interest will be steep either way. There will be civil unrest. There will be a reckoning. Do you have the courage to do what is right for America? Or, will you bow to the wants and needs of those who don't even have the right to remain here?

There will be a reckoning. It will come in November of this year, again in 2008 and yet again in 2010.

We will not allow America to be stolen by third world agitators and thieves.

Most of New Mexico was part of the Republic of Texas after it seceded from Mexico and before it was bought by the US. In many places you can see the four flags that have flown over NM all being flown together: Spain, Mexico, Texas, and US. (They do generally omit the Confederate flag, which was only about a year anyway IIRC.)

I was done after this since I KNOW I didn't dream the big rallies last year where the "immigrants" (as they called themselves) were running around waving Mexican flags protesting for rights as U.S. citizens.

utter B.S. Do I need to hunt down some info on those rallies Steven or do you remember them as well?

I found this letter circulating on the net and thought I'd post it here because here is a retired Border Patrolman - obviously has served this country well, but obviously his letter is full of generalizations and inaccuracies. I'm glad he did speak out though and I'd certainly pay more attention to his opinions than others.

I agree, Marc. He's made some bold generalizations and interestingly he's actually anti-immigration.

BTW, my grandfather was a border patrolman back in the 20's and 30's near Sassabee (sp) and Nogales.

I feel like a lone gunman on this single issue with regard to illegal immigration - NAFTA. It's what NOBODY wants to talk about, yet we only need to look to Canada to understand why we don't have a million illegal Canadians migrating to the U.S.. It seems futile to talk about illegal immigration and ignore the elephant in the closet.

(note: in your mind, replace ? with an apostrophe...not sure why the page showed up like that)

...why NAFTA—which took effect 12 years ago amid promises to raise the fortunes of Mexico?s beleaguered workers—hasn?t done more to reduce desperate labor migration over the U.S. border. That illegal flow, about a million migrants a year, is as heavy as ever. (Just ask CNN's Lou Dobbs, who?s broadcasting live from Canc'is week because he's so aggravated about it.) NAFTA has not been an altogether bad deal for Mexico; it has buoyed the economy and improved opportunities for workers in the more technologically advanced north. But it has only exacerbated their plight in the nation?s south and midsection—states like Oaxaca and Zacatecas that are hemorrhaging workers to California lettuce fields, North Carolina poultry plants and Chicago restaurants.

The big reason, say critics, is that NAFTA all but sold Mexico?s campesinos up the Rio Grande by failing to challenge lavish U.S. and Canadian agricultural subsidies—the kind that all too often shut Third World farmers out of First World markets. Moreover, free trade has also failed to generate enough U.S. and other foreign investment in new industries and small- and medium-size businesses—and, as a result, hasn't created enough new Mexican jobs. Even when new jobs do appear, the nation's unforgiving low-wage business culture—the dark shame of Mexico's political and economic leaders, which NAFTA was also supposed to reform—makes sure that they still often pay in a day what similar work would pay in an hour in the U.S. Add the recent deluge of dirt-cheap Chinese imports into North America that are taking business previously provided by Mexico, and the urgency for Mexican workers to head north only heightens.

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,...1178497,00.html

So, in a nutshell, we can't ween ourselves from cheap Third World Labor...or at least Corporate America can't.

Here's another conservative's perspective on illegal immigration...

I am a social and fiscal conservative. I agree 100% that we should protect our borders and that all illegal immigrants should be deported immediately. If someone wants to live and work in the U.S., they must go through legal channels to do so.

But I'm also a realist. Mexicans will continue to flood our borders as long as Americans continue to hire them. They are not here for free social security, they are not here for welfare checks, and the vast majority of them are not here to engage in theft or other crimes to finance their lives. They move to the U.S. to work.

I agree that we must better protect our border. But our border with Mexico is thousands of miles long and we will never win the war on illegal immigration as long American companies continue to hire the cheap labor that illegal immigrants provide. Yes, we need to stop people from entering our country illegally but defending the border is only half the battle. We must crack down on American companies that illegaly hire illegal workers. Serious investigation and strict enforcement of labor laws in geographic areas and in job markets that typically employ illegal immigrants is an obvious and appropriate response. Stiff fines levied on those employers could more than pay for the cost of enforcement.

To turn around and try to blame our immigration problems on a neighboring government is absurd and gets us no closer to the solution. It is sticking our head in the sand and blaming the problem on someone else. The Mexican government has absolutely no responsibility to protect our borders for us--and their citizens would be rightfully upset if their government violated their own Constitution and limited the free movement of its citizens. The Mexican government does, however, have a responsibility to look out for the well-being of their people regardless of where they are and how they got there; just like American consulates look out for the well-being of our citizens abroad--including those Americans that have violated a law in a foreign country.

The United States has enough enemies in the world already. Creating a non-existant enemy out of Mexico or its people serves no productive purpose other than to promote and encourage further tension, racism, and resentment on both sides of the border. Illegal immigration is illegal and, as such, those that engage in it should be detained and deported. However, to suggest that the Mexican government is actually encouraging it--much less to suggest that it is an act of war--is extremism, bigotry, and simply uninformed bunk which cheapens the legitimate debate of how to resolve the problem of illegal immigration.

It is my sincere hope that journalists, our U.S. politicians, and especially our society will not let themselves be deceived by those that would seek to intentionally demonize the government and people of our southern neighbor.

One thing the retired border officer glosses over sloppily, in my opinion; the idea that Americans will do the work "for a decent wage."

Can I just say, no ######, Sherlock? The problem isn't that at some hypothetical wage that Americans would do the work, it's that you're unlikely to find an American who is going to work many of the jobs *as they are* at the ####### wages currently paid. It's not just a matter of sending the illegals home and hiring Americans, because Americans aren't going to work for sub-sub-poverty level work.

Also, I think two of his statements contradict each other: either illegal immigration is a big part of the economy and sucking away jobs, or it isn't. It can't be both at the same time.

We gotta get the illegals either documented or sent back, and probably a combination of both, but if we want it not to be a problem, we're going to have to rework NAFTA. Canadians aren't crossing the border and it's not because northern people are more lawful or that we put up a REALLY long fence, it's that the economy in Canada is healthy, the state has a good security net, and it's nice to live there.

in some places this extremism is gettin out of control.. like those new urban areas in Cali.. where the 'white settlers' are starting to get 'invaded' by hispanics and blacks.. there's been an increase in those stupid 'white power' supremacist groups, and nothing is being done against that..

they even let @rseholes like Pat Buchanan get away with it, like in his new book where he shares ideas like "Simply put, America is not a nation of ideas. It is a nation of people -- white people. Buchanan is especially overt in making this case when he endorses the view of his late mentor and editor, Sam Francis, that American and European civilizations could never have been created without the "genetic endowments" of whites. He goes on to describe discussions of race as "the Great Taboo"; to ignore the role of race, he adds, is "like not telling one's doctor of a recurring pain that could kill you."

Yea...I know what you mean...here is an organization that I'm sure you would approve of.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

The Klansmen apparently targeted the 16-year-old boy, whose father is a Kuna Indian from Panama, because they thought he was Hispanic. They beat, kicked and spit on him during the attack, which occurred shortly after midnight at the Meade County Fairgrounds in Brandenburg, Ken. They also shouted racial epithets and threw whiskey on him."
