Who else made plans before visa in hand?

Getting neurotic here...

I know that everyone says, don't make definite plans until you have the visa in hand but as mentioned in another thread, I've made plans around the interview date including giving notice at work, giving notice to my landlord, moving arrangements, etc. Logistically and financially, I had to do it.

I've seen other Canadians do this too. If I were going through a MENA consulate, I wouldn't but judging from everyone's experiences with Montreal and Vancouver, I don't anticipate a hiccup. *crosses fingers*

Anyone else make plans before visa in hand?

There'd better not be a hiccup along the way or I think I'll lose my mind!

Joel made his travel plans (flights) before the visa was in his hands so we really took a chance. The visa was delivered on the 12th May and his flight was for the 13th May. He did that before we realized his interview was on a Friday, and MTL wasn't open on Saturdays so he had to have the visa mailed to him. Whew...we were cutting things rather close!

That is close!

My interview is on a Monday and I'm moving on the Friday that same week. Vancouver issues the same day but we are not leaving Vancouver until the day after just in case.

I needed to give notice at both my apartment and at my work with sufficient time for them to hire my replacement and for me to train her so we made no final arrangements until after the visa was in hand. Mind you, I had been sitting on what to do the minute that visa was in place and put it into action right away. As it was, I received the visa March 30 and moved May 7th.

Yeah, I just couldn't lose the money on staying here another month. My rent is super expensive and I need that money for moving costs (also super expensive). I've been at this place for 6 years almost and I owed it to my landlords to give them proper notice.

Wow... looks like most of you cut things really close.

I played it really safe and left for the U.S. two months after receiving the visa (mostly, though, it was to appease my parents who were sort of hurt that I'd chosen my husband over them, even though as you all know, it's not like that...).

The only plans I'd made before having my visa in hand were having my wedding dress made and having preliminary plans for our wedding & reception sites. So, we had a wedding date, but held our breaths until the visa before sending out invites and booking the sites.

plans? absolutely. we planned our wedding for this May. we applied for our K1 back in April ... and judging from the timelines at the time ... planning our wedding over a year AFTER we applied seemed overly cautious at the time. in fact, at one point we thought i'd get my visa too early. nope .. still waiting for an appn't .. checklish sent in at end of December. Wedding date isn't flexible either ... travel arrangements have been made, deposits, etc...

gotta love the uscis .. or rather i will eventually love them as they will be the reason i'm able to go over to the mighty usa to be with the one i love.

I'm in the same boat. My wedding is taking place in October, and we sent out our papers in December. If the whole process takes 9 months, I'll be happy, but I know I'm taking a risk.

Worst case is that I'm hoping that my church will let us have the religious ceremony for the time being until the visa goes through and we get married by a judge afterwards... :clock:

I had already packed up my apartment and moved in with my parents 4 months ahead, and my work contract was completed 2 weeks before my interview.

My visa interview was on a Thursday.

I entered the US 4 days later.

We had a full religious ceremony with reception afterwards 6 days after that.

We kinda cut it close.

Would I recommend it? Nope! Too many things can go wrong nowadays.

My appt. is on Tues at the MTL Embassy and I am FREAKING OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I gave notice to my work and booked my flight for March 9. My mom booked hers as well, to be present for the civil cermony etc.....

Did I say I am flipping out! What if I dont have all my forms in order, if I missed something vital. In fact, I signed in tonight because I want to verify in my Fiance filled out his I-134 correct.

I need some seroius therapy...

We didn't. C.'s not moving here until the end of May, which blows, but also means we have plenty of time to save up, for him to finish up at work, and for him to get his life in order.

If I had to do it all over again, we would have married last August and filed for a CR-1.

We had the interview Mid - January, and I left a couple of weeks to get things packed and moved out of my place, moved into my mum's for a week and then B. came and picked me up and took me to my new place. I needed the 2 weeks to say good bye, and get things in order, but our original plan (before they put the kybosh on next day visas) was for B. to come up from US, pick me up, skip by Montreal on our way home.. That's our story :)

Just wanted to quote this for emphasis. It did end up working for me (thankfully) but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I was a nervous wreck before and during the consular interview!

i waitied until my husband's visa was in his hand- if we would have booked flight after the interview- we would have missed flight- his visa didnt come till 3 WEEKS AFTER INTERVIEW!!!

I made so many decisions under the impression that the K1 would come through in 6 months or less. Applied to USCIS March 30, 2006. Quit job June 1. Had wedding planned and ended up just doing a "Social celebration" with nothing legal because the K1 didn't come through yet. I've been off work for 9 months now and I JUST got the visa yesterday. I was shocked at how long it took, especially to get an interview. I would still be waiting but I called the congresswoman for our area and she made a call to Montreal. Voila, interview! Anyway, I would recommend NOT to make any plans until you have the K1 in your hand. It's too unpredictable.
