Why does it say FNU in front of my husband's name? Confusing

Says that in front of my wife's name also. Either means First Name Unknown.. or.. Family Name Unknown.

(my wife doesnt use a last name)

thats for first name unknown - fnu.

sometimes on the passport the first name is all messed up, and thats how you end up with FNU

my close friend has same, her husband's first name is long like harshsukhchainjeetaman singh and on passport the prinitng was messed up so nvc gav him the new first name FNU, we call him fnu jeeja ji now.


We work in tandem.. one from Calif, one from VA.

And we cover everyone in between, literally.

Literally being the key operational word lol

But his name is NOT long. And its spelled correctly on his passport.

It says on the interview email, "Dear FNU (first name, last name)

I'm confused again lol
