Me and my wife plan to visit Hanoi for a few days ( a week or less). But neither of us have been there before.

We figure that it would make more sense to go on some sort of guided tour.

Anyone have any experience or advice please?

We don't want to spend a lot but we also do want an enjoyable trip.

I have experience with Saigon tourist. Had a 7-day tour with them. Cost ~ 7 trieu (or $430) per person. That includes round trip airfare, 3 meals/day (although morning meals were usually complimentary hotel breakfasts), all lodging and transportation, resort tickets, etc. We visited Hanoi, Tam Coc (Ninh Binh Province), Yen Tu mountain, Ha Long Bay, Sapa. We stayed at 2-3 star hotels, comparable to US standards. They provide good services, pay attention to your needs. The tour guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. Do you know Vietnamese? They know English, and will speak English to you, but only for important things. You would be able to enjoy it much more if you know the Vietnamese language.

They do have English contents. I just don't know if it's as complete as the Vietnamese version. If not, your wife can help you plan it :).

I'de just hire a couple motorbikes and have them show me around, much cheaper that way. If you're not comfortable with that, you could always check out the travel agent who I use to use back in the day, Nghia, he works for http://www.vexploretravel.com/. Good and pretty cheap as well. Have fun!
