American passport. Approx 5cm x 5cm, or 2in x 2in

The detailed specs are here at travel.state.gov, but the most important things that people seem to get wrong is the size and the fact that the subject must be directly facing the camera. Click on the "composition checklist" link for samples.

I used German sized photos, about the same size as the ones you describe. No problems.

When it came to the photos for the actual visa, I used the machine in the lobby at USCIS, Frankfurt as I couldn't get hold of US-sized photos. They were German sized too! So in Frankfurt I can say it definitely was not an issue. You could always call where you are filing and ask?

Best wishes.

We just submitted our I-130 to the London USCIS office. Our photos were from a Tesco photobooth. We've already received the postcard saying they've received our petition and explaining how to track it... so looks like if you're filing in the UK, the UK style passport photos are fine for the I-130. :)

Thanks for the feedback. I feel a little better now. Ironically it's my US photo that I am now concerned with because it looks too dark and has some shadows. It was taken by one of those UPS stores that do passport photos too! It was my fault for accepting it though in retrospect. Hopefully I won't get an RFE for it.

It looks like to track it, you would need to know the date they wrote for the receipt of your petition. I can give you the web site they gave later on when I'm home from work and you could try some dates that would seem likely. PM me tomorrow if I've forgotten! :) In case you haven't found this info anywhere else, I've heard that the average time to approval is eight weeks.

With regard to the photos for the I-130, I do not know about any other consulate but Frankfurt didn't seem to give a hoot about the quality or guidelines, since all they do with it is staple it (with a staple right through our faces!) to the bottom of your paperwork for when you come in. I guess it's just a check-against-the-passport thing just to confirm you are the person in the passport. Some people have been handed their I-130 photo back at the interview there too. In my experience, the fussiness about the guidelines is when it comes to submitting the photo for the actual visa (even then, the non-US size was not an issue at Frankfurt.)

Best wishes :)

Oops! I was wrong about being able to track it individually. The postcard is misleading. All the website shows is that as of today they're processing petitions received on 5 December 2006.

Actually, I believe that is incorrect. To my knowledge, you cannot track DCF petitions online.

I have found out that it is different because I applied at field office in London rather than a service center in the states. I don't believe I will receive a receipt number. My NOA1 is the postcard I have already received from London.

I stand corrected.... filing at London USCIS is a different process than filing directly with USCIS in the states. Too bad you don't have a way to track your case. Besides, logging onto the USCIS site everyday to check your status only to find nothing's changed doesn't do any good for your sanity!

You should receive a receipt from USCIS, and you can go to the USCIS website and track your petition using your receipt number. You can also sign up to receive e-mail updates about the petition. If you still haven't received a receipt, call the USCIS office.
