All the mail my husband and I have to exchange takes forever so I'm gathering things now I will need for the NVC stage. It seems, from what I'm reading, I will need to send NVC a certified copy of our marriage certificate. My husband must also have on him the originals of all the documents I have submitted in case they ask for them at the interview. I'm scared to death to mail our original marriage certificate to him. I don't trust the mail. So I guess we need two certified copies.

Does anyone know the process of obtaining a certified copy of the marriage certificate in Lagos Nigeria....and the cost?

Thank you.

I think that you will have to go to the local registry in the state where you got married and get a copy. Then take that copy (at least two) with some Nigerian executed affidavits of witnesses (done by a registered barrister). He will then have to take all that to Lagos to the HIgh Commission to have it LEGALIZED to be authentic at the Ministry of Foreign affairs. This is what we did for the Bachelorhood certificate so I imagine that a local marriage license has to be done the same way.. Registered mail works well though.

Not sure how to get a certified copy, but I sent the original certificate to NVC along with the other IV forms, police cert needed. For my husband to carry to the interview I sent original forms (i.e., I-130, G-325, etc.) that I signed (& he signed his part when he received them). But the marriage certificate I sent to him was a copy showing the stamp (this was hard to copy though as it is very faint. Used a darker imaging setting).

Thanks. He doesn't have the original in Lagos with him. I have it in the US and I won't mail it until we have an official copy just in case it gets lost in the mail. He called the registry and someone told him they don't issue copies unless (some nonsense about being under contract or something). I told him call again because that man sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking

about.
