I'm not sure if the deflections are a way to avoid reality or just another way to say "my gun is bigger than yours". Or maybe it's both. But it takes a "special" kind of person to have no sympathy for the mass murder of hundreds of thousands of other human beings.

I don't think that it was mass murder, nor does one need to even believe that it was the wrong thing to do in order to feel sympathy for those who were killed instantly or wound up horribly mangled but survived, by the dropping of a single bomb. I sincerely doubt that there were anyone involved on the US end that didnt also recognize the horror being unleashed even at the time and with Japanese atrocities fresh in their minds to be avenged. There is no patriotic betrayal in recognition of and sympathy for the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The concept has been touched on in regards to dropping the bombs to avoid the planned invasion of Japan but another factor I am convinced was a part of it was the miniscule jump we could only hope that we had on the Soviet Union in building nuclear weapons and grave concerns about the conflict dragging on but former allies becoming the combatants. I think our decision was the right but horrible one to make.
