Yea but they also recommend you do the SSN before you get married?

Yes, you can absolutely apply for it before you get married. We intend to do that, but won't receive it before we marry. I'm just pointing out that you may not need the SSN to obtain your marriage license and marry. That "requirement" tends to vary by county and may not really be a requirement, even if the county website says it is. So, if you'd like to get the license before the card arrives, give them a call to find out. I went just the other day and acquired our license, and she isn't even in the States, yet. It's good for 90 days, and we plan on her being here on the 14th and us marrying on the 18th - we didn't want to be hindered by the 48 hour waiting period. My SSN was required, because I have one. We'll be married before her's arrives. Since she'll be keeping her last name, we won't need to make that adjustment afterwards on her Social Security card. If you don't want to have to make that change, then you should wait to receive it before the marriage ceremony.

Correction...you'll still have to change it after you get married, to reflect the change to your name if there is one.

I'm sorry to hear this, that's very unfair :( I hope he'll get his visa soon!!

Thanks for your reply :) I've read that somewhere too however I've also read it's supposed to be up "immediately". Just waiting for that info to be up on the website so we can apply for my SSN.

I arrived Tuesday and applied for my SSN yesterday (Friday), I was in the system at least as early as Thursday, but possibly within a day. Was told I will receive within 2 weeks. Applied for our marriage license also, have to give 72 hrs notice in TX.

With reference to the 2 week wait: That applied when it was all done manually as I understand. Now they are doing the POE etc electronically you should be able to look up your I94 status immediately, and so apply for your SSN as soon as it shows up. I took my copy of I94, Birth Certificate and Passport, SSN was one of the easiest things I done yet 8-)

Ooooh! I had no idea I could get an SSN before marriage. That's awesome. It will mean I can sort bank accounts etc. I guess. Instead of waiting months.

I have the I-94 and we haven't married yet (We're in Vegas so we can just do that in the blink of an eye whenever we feel like it)

For the SSN I am filling in the form and in the notes for Q5 it says if I tick "legal alien not allowed to work" (which is the case I believe) then i must provide a document from a US Federal, State or local gov agency that explains why i need a SSN.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me???

Ooops. Sorry. You would think after all these months I would research before firing off a question. HA! It's been a while since the 129... :o)

So i understand on a K1 I am "a legal alien allowed to work" for the purposes of the SSN application. Good. Stand down!
