I definitely understand your frustration. That is the problem with manually typing in hundreds of cases into the system daily. Hopefully it will not cause delays for you in the big picture.

If you guys have any questions specifically for me,

I will be glad to help via private message.

Oh I did confirm with the NVC rep that it won't affect how our case has been progressing. So at least that is good. We also just mailed the documents in. I will call them next week and follow up on our request too. Hopefully they'll do it soon!

Hi, thank you for the reply.

I just sent my email asking for the correction of my name. I'm very curious to learn how long it will take (or even whether) they will reply to me.

She said she could see my DS-261 on the system but she refused to do anything about it :-( and said I should wait for ***42*** days for getting the IV fee invoiced.

How do you guys get them to review it on the phone with you? Is there any special tactic?

I called today to check on my DS-261 and because I hadn't been able to give them my email when I first got my case number, nor when I called back once or twice, so I asked if she could take it now, and at the same time she checked my DS-261 and said I'd be getting the IV invoice within a week by email.

So for tactic . . . depends on who you get maybe? Or just wait a few more days? In general everyone I've spoken to has been super nice, and when they said they couldn't access the case yet to put in my email, I believed them, but maybe it was just a brush off, who knows!

Hey BRlove. I have the same problem as you. They have misspelled my husband's(the petitioner) middle name. I called and asked but they said they cannot update it on the phone. So I had to type out a formal letter explaining my situation, attach a photocopy of the petitioner's passport reflecting his correct name, also we had to attach a barcoded cover sheet from any of the online portals on top, and ship it to the NVC. At first I was going to email this whole thing but the NVC operator told me it might get processed faster if I mailed them instead of emailing. She said emails might not even get touched for a long time, but it depends on us. We could choose to do whatever.

Anyways, we chose to mail the documents, which we did just today. So lets see. Hopefully they will update it soon.

P.S. She told me this would not delay my case, and both will keep on getting processed independently of each other.

Hey Urvashi, thank you a lot for this. It's really helpful :-D

I'm going to talk to my husband in the US and ask him to send them a letter. The representative just asked me to add the usual information (names of applicant and petitioner, birth date) and a copy of my passport. It's interesting that they asked for your cover sheet - every time I look at mine I want to cry because my name is spelled wrong in it, lol.

If you want to look at a sample letter, I wrote one and posted it just yesterday on this topic. Maybe if you went back a couple pages, you'd find it.

Just, don't forget to put NVC's ADDRESS AND SUBJECT right after the date.

Other than that, it was perfect.

Also add Dear Sir/Madam after mentioning petitioner and beneficiary's information and above the paragraph where you explain the problem.

Hey quick question guys.

I'm going to send in the packet now.

Just the Bio Data Page is needed for the beneficiaries passport right? Not the WHOLE packet?

Another post indicated a few people sent the whole passport pages for the IV packet.

Also, the first two times I called, they didn't mention anything about mails getting processed earlier. But last night this rep told me very clearly and specifically that that was the case.

The first two times they did ask me to send a letter first, but then when I would ask if I could just email them, they said yeah that would be okay too.

So now I'm leaning more towards sending an actual mail instead of an email.

Right. I know it hasn't been long. I should be more patient. But the DS-261 is such a simple form, I don't understand why they can't just accept it automatically.

In my case specifically, I will only be able to send the package next Tuesday, because I'm currently outside of my home country and I need to request one of my police reports in person (I actually need to send several of them, because I moved a lot with the company I work for in the recent past, hmpf)...

I guess I probably should resign myself that it will also take around a month for them to check all my documents, right?

Another post indicated a few people sent the whole passport pages for the IV packet.

Just to be on the safe side, I sent the first two pages, where the first one reflect my country's symbol and the passport officer's signature and the second one has my picture and other information, and the last page, i.e. the biographical data page.

It is better to send more information than less. Lol.

I didn't send a photocopy of my whole passport. Just first two and the last page.

That is correct.

From NVC: Photocopy of Valid Passport Biographic Data Page

You and each family member immigrating with you must submit a photocopy of the biographic data page of your valid passport. The biographic data page is the page of your passport with your photograph, name, date, and place of birth.

  • You must send a photocopy of your biographic data page to the NVC.
  • You must submit a photocopy of your biographic data page to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate at the time of your interview.

Wait a day or two. Once they have your case in their system and are able to update it, on case they aren't able to review it, just ask if you could do the form with them over the phone. That usually works. At least it did for me.
