Question for people in the Boston area.... does anyone know of a good place to get couscous?

My husband and I have a craving for some good couscous and apparently we don't have the "right" equipment to make it. In other words, under no circumstances am I allowed to boil the couscous and we also don't have a steamer.

I was looking online and found a restaurant called the Baraka Café in Cambridge.. looked interesting. Anybody been there? Any other suggestions?

Jenn would probably know. I've never had couscous from a restaurant. I always make this:

And my kids love it and even my husband loved it when I brought a box to Egypt and cooked it for him. Actually he just asked me the other day to please send a few boxes so he can have his sister cook it for him. Takes all of 5 minutes to make in a normal pan. No special steamer or anything needed. Just need a pot, water, olive oil or butter and the box. :) Oh...and a stove and something to time it with. :)

I have two boxes in my kitchen. Thought maybe I could make it that way now, and then once we buy a steamer or a couscousiere we can make it the real way... hahaha, not happening.

It's also our anniversary/valentine's day celebration so we were thinking about going to a North African restaurant, which is why I asked about restaurants. Citysearch wasn't particularly helpful.

Thanks for the suggestions though everyone :)

Sorry, Holly, we're not big couscous fans. And although we used to live in Cambridge, never ate at that Baraka cafe.

I did try the couscous at Tangierino in Charlestown and it was very good I thought as far as couscous goes, but it's a bit on the pricey side.

They'll also make it for you at the halal markets around. There are a couple in Revere that we go to, but we've never tried the couscous.

ETA: just noticed that you're looking to go out for a celebration. In which case you shhould defnitely look up Tangierino.

Made some instant couscous and my husband laughs and says its not couscous...it's just not. So we will be off to by the steamer and the regular couscous for next time.

Jenn- how could you not LOVE couscous?

I looked at their website too... looks fantastic. I'm thinking that's going to be my suggestion for our night out of the house.

My husband did the same thing... except I didn't get as far as you did. I got the pot out and the water boiling before he said "Stop! WHAT are you DOING??" Me? I can't tell the difference.... They both taste great to me.

Maybe this is just an Egyptian thing but my husband had never tried couscous this way before. They only way he and his sisters have ever had it before was sweet, not salty. More like cream of wheat I would think, so for him, this stuff in the box was cool 'cause it tasted so very different. It's funny how countries side by side practically have such different food tastes. :)

Very interesting... my MIL prepares couscous every Friday for lunch and usually it's with a lot of meat and veggies and sauce. They also have sweet couscous which she prepared once for me while I was in Algeria which was plain couscous with cinnamon and sugar sprinkled on it and they drank milk with it.

The sweet was good, but I definitely prefer the salty.
