My case was just approved today. Please update. Thanks.

Also, I read that the naturalization process is taking 5 months on average. Does that mean we can apply earlier than the typical 3 months to make sure we can vote during the next presidential election?

No, you need to be eligible to file for citizenship first, which is 90 days before your three-year-anniversary of becoming a permanent resident (if you are filing on the basis of marriage to a U.S. citizen).

Personally, I am not expecting to vote in the elections, since my local office is very backed up and I do not expect to have my oath ceremony until sometime in 2017, even if I filed the very first day I am eligible in August.

You're considered eligible for naturalization on the 3rd anniversary of your conditional residency approval date. The fact your I-751 hasn't been approved yet will NOT change that fact.

It is because a lot of USCIS procedures take forever, you're allowed to file the documents up to 90 days before your eligibility date--a rule that happens to be applicable in the case of naturalization too. Am I clear?

Added Birkingirl's approval, but also to answer your question in addition to what HK12 has said:

I've seen a person on Trackitt.com who filed I-751 about almost one month earlier than he or she should, but the case was already approved anyway. Technically according to USCIS' guidelines, an application submitted too early can be returned. Therefore, if you file too early, you're taking a risk of case being returned, which will cause more delay, but will it for sure be returned? We really don't know apparently.
