Congrats on the Eagle Scout. I was on a few boards of review and know that it takes a lot of work and effort to achieve the rank of Eagle. Congrats to the Eagle and both parents.

Thank you bokar83. I have sat on a few Eagle BORs myself. (The Tenderfoot ones are more fun though. )

Our guy has to complete three Eagle required badges. They are finished, but he still needs to meet with the Merit Badge Counselors and have the blue cards signed. Barring any issues, he will be eligible for his BOR in mid-January.

It will be really nice if he can do that as a Citizen.

I posted this on the main board, but thought I'd post it in my status update forum also.

Well, my husband had his naturalization interview this morning and it ruined his day.

We've had a fairly easy time with immigration to this point, and it really caught him off guard to have such a bad experience with the officer today. He easily passed both the English and the Civics portion of the interview. But, the officer was nasty and disrespectful when asking questions about our marriage, mostly focusing on finances. For example, when he asked about "accounts" my husband assumed bank accounts and told the officer we had 2 joint accounts and told him the name of the bank. The officer pressed and said, "Are those the only accounts you have?" and my husband said "yes" and the officer rolled his eyes and gave him a nasty look. Perhaps he wanted him to mention joint credit cards? To my husband, "accounts" means bank accounts. In the same vein, the officer asked if he had joined any organizations where he paid dues. My husband said, "no." To my husband, he is thinking of a union, for example. The officer asked the question again in a rude way. Perhaps he wanted him to say that we belong to the local gym and pay a monthly fee to the gym? Whatever it was, he was treating my husband like he was an idiot. He was similarly disrespectful when mentioning his step children and other topics.

We've proved the validity of our marriage twice during this process, and my husband had documentation in-hand should he have wanted to see proof of the ongoing relationship, but the officer never asked to see anything except for his green card and drivers license.

Needless to say, he didn't mark the box on the form that said approved, although he did notate on the form that the tests were passed. The box checked was for "further review."

It's hard to convey the nastiness of this guy as I'm writing it out, but I've rarely seen my husband so disturbed and offended. I honestly would have expected more of this type of demeanor during the AOS rather than naturalization.

Mymarriagejourney, I'm sorry your spouse and you had to go through this. On the bright side, your husband should be approved for citizenship soon and can close this chapter! Good luck and please update us on the good news! All the best.

I wish I could say that I believe he will be approved for citizenship soon, but I definitely feel uncertain since the "approved" box was not checked and since the officer didn't even mention the oath ceremony. It's extremely discouraging and frustrating. We will see...

Just got back from the interview. It was very quick and I thought it went well as my case officer was friendly and professional. I did not receive immediately approval and was told that my decision would come in the mail. We did talk about the oath ceremony taking place in court across the street since I've requested a name change, so hopefully that's a good sign. I've included details for other NYCers that may find it helpful.

I got to the building at 1:30pm for a 1:50pm appointment (must enter on Broadway with appointment letter in hand) and spent about 5 minutes going through security. Checked in on two different floors and was given a number by 1:40pm. Waited in a room of about 75 people for 10 minutes until my number was called by my interview officer (only 2 minutes after my appointment time). Most of the people in the room were there before me so the order is dependent on your specific case officer. Cell phone usage is allowed in the waiting room. Overall the process is a lot less organized than the biometrics appointment.

I was sworn in and then sat down. I was asked for my passport, green card, social security card, and state issued ID. We started first with the language and civics test. I read out loud the sentence "There are 100 senators" and wrote out "Alaska is the largest state." My six civics questions were:

- Name one war fought by the United States in the 1900s.

- Who is the Chief Justice of the United States now?

- The House of Representatives has how many voting members?

- We elect a U.S. Representative for how many years?

- Who is the "Father of Our Country"?

- In what month do we vote for President?

The officer reviewed my application page by page asking me questions on each section. I highly recommend reading over the application before your interview. Once I had recited my application verbally she asked me the yes/no questions. I was asked for my tax forms so I handed over the last 4 years of federal tax transcripts. I was then asked to review some forms and sign them along with the two passport photos I sent in with the application. I received a receipt stating that I had passed the tests and that USCIS will be sending me a written decision about my application.

The one thing that makes me nervous is that at the very end my officer asked why I waited so long to file for citizenship. I had already relaxed by this point thinking the interview was over and said that I liked being a Japanese citizen (so stupid). I then continued to say that before I didn't know whether I would move back to Japan but now that I've decided I would be living in the United States for the rest of my life it made sense to apply. I'm really hoping that this brain fart does not cost me my citizenship.

The interview took 20 minutes and I was out of the building by 2:15pm. ​Now the waiting game begins again...... hoping for some good news in the near future.
