importing my car from Canda to the US

I called DMV to ask what they needed from me to register my car in the US. They indicated that they needed the compliance letter from the car Manufacturer (in my case it's Ford) stamped by Customs and proof of insurance. I called Customs and they told me that this was correct and that I needed to get the compliance letter from Ford. They told me as the car was a Ford there was no duty, but there was no duty anyway because I was allowed to bring one car over. I called Ford twice and got two different answers. The first guy told me that I needed to go to a local dealership and they would give me the letter...to the tune of over $100. I called Ford back again today and was advised that I could simply go on the website "shopfordgear" and in the Billing Sheet section order the compliance letter online for $18 and it would be emailed to me. All they need is the VIN number. Just some information for those of you wondering about this process. This stressed me out so I posted in hopes that it would help someone. :-)

I would suggest you actually sell the car or give it to a family member or have them take it over. The standards of the law on emissions and other engine compliances vary from country to country. As well, each state has a separate code of what a car is to be equipped with. Example, Some states require rear defroster and others do not. I know sometimes you have to have a certified work done to make those codes which can cause sometimes 2-3 thousand dollars and then the taxes and fees of bringing the car into the country sometimes is not worth doing. I know car dealerships in the U.S.do not usually take Canadian vehicles on trade ins or such as well.

It's normally not an issue for Canadians to import cars as long as they have a compliance letter and no liens on the car. You have a year to import a car and no duty should be paid.

Hi NLR!! just thought of something, I don't have payments left on my car, and I am not sure if the registration card is considered to be the title, meaning, that it shows I owe my car?

You'd have to see for your province what you need to show you completely own your car.

Please help!!! I'm clueless about bringing the car from Canada to US

No duty should be paid even though the car was made in Japan?

I'm wondering if I can drive down my car from Canada to the US few months after my POE?

Thank you in advance!

I just imported my car yesterday, all I needed to do was show the compliance letter provided by GM and my ownership. You shouldn't have any problems, it was a very quick process.

Hi.

I imported my car yesterday October 5, very easy and the CO was very nice.

1-KIA compliance letter ( stating only conform to CMVSS and US EPA and no recall).

2- plate copy+ I took a picture of the sticker under the hood + the sticker on the window + plate and print them, the CO was very happy. he didn t move from his desk, he proceed the importation without checking the car

3-they didn t ask for the bank letter I said I m the owner he write on the form and I signed it.

4-copy of your driving licence + assurance

I print out the blue book page for my car and he used mine, to tell me how much I have to pay for duty , my car is a KIA sportage 20013 I paid 405$ cause its made from Korea

by the way you need to fill 02 forms (EPA form. 3520-1 and the declaration form where you check box 2B)

hope I helped with this.

and thank you for Vj members who helped to get prepared for all this

I imported my car a few days ago. It was no problem. Brought my car, ownership and compliance letter from Ford. The whole process took 15 minutes with no issues. No cost.
