I always find the lowest fares by calling a travel agency that is a consolidator. I just booked a June/July flight from Chicago to Sofia Bulgaria with one short stop in Italy for $991. The cheapest I could find online (one short stop) was $1384. I've used this company three times now- http://www.3kmtravel.com/ They do charge a 4% fee if you pay by credit card. They prefer you send a check draft form.

Good luck shopping!

Thanks everyone. The one student web site I checked required a .edu email address, which of course she doesn't have, being in Germany... I'll follow up on all of these leads.

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

Is Frankfurt the only option?

Example, Delta flies often and are cheaper into/out-of Dusseldorf. I know it's a hassel if you/she lives in Frankfurt since it's about a 2.5 to 3.0 hour drive. Also Munich is an option.

As far as price - I think it has been said here already, but you may be planning too early. Not that the cheap tickets have been sold, but may have not been offered yet. They release them as the plane is sold. If you're flexible on your departure/return dates, you can wait to catch a bargain - may want to use a good travel agent - tons of them in Germany. =)

By the way - found this in the newspaper recently...

WASHINGTON The U.S. and European Union have reached a tentative agreement that would give airlines greater freedom to choose trans-Atlantic routes and potentially lead to lower fares, the government announced Friday.

While details of the pact were not released, it is intended to allow European airlines to fly from anywhere in the EU to any point in the U.S., and vice versa, while shedding rules that restrict how much carriers are allowed to charge fliers.

EU Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot said he would ask EU nations to back the deal when EU transport ministers meet March 22. The U.S. Congress must also back the deal before the new rules would kick in Oct. 28.

"Any agreement . . . would provide enormous benefits to airline passengers," David Stempler, president of the Washington, D.C.-based Air Travelers Association said. Article Date March 03, 2007
