Shortgun? Don't forget to spend sometime and a firing range, it helps to learn how to use your weapon safely and affectively. Try them out, shoot them up, see how it feels and fits in your hands, how hard it kicks when you fire. GET a safe to lock it up too! I believe in GUNS in the hands of the law-enforcers, after all, they have better training and it's their job to handle these criminals. Nonetheless, if it makes one feel safer to own a firearm, by all mean do it and excercise your 2nd Right!

Good luck and safe trip to Cleveland MYLE

:o

YIKES -- probably not the USA introduction you had in mind. As others have said, glad to hear things turned out safely. Best of luck to you both on the journey to Cleveland.

My Le,

Sorry to hear the about the misfortune. I lived in Houston last summer and may live there again this summer. I've heard of these crimes.

A lesson I learned is: research the neighborhoods when moving to a new city. This was not in Houston, but a few years ago I made a mistake of signing a lease without ever looking at the apartment or researching the neighborhoods because I lived 3 hours away and had no time for a trip. Turns out, the place was ill-maintained - and the apartment was robbed while I was away on a 2-week vacation.

I reported to the police when I got back. Of course they have bigger crimes to solve, and the only thing they could do for me was to patrol by my house once a day. Nice of them (no mocking intended).

They got one of my credit cards and charged $200+ at a local store 3 minutes walk from the place. The credit card company credited me back, though.

They got one of my checkbooks. None was used, but I closed the account anyway.

They also stole my mail. One of wich had a SIM card I ordered. They used it to make phone calls everywhere, which I could trace via online call records and online reverse phone lookup. Lots of calls were made to the city/state prison. No surprise there :). I was doing some investigative work on my own with these phone numbers, not hoping to shoot him, but to get some names and give to the police. Well I got busy with something else and let it drop. I continued to stay there until the end of the lease 5 months later. I was by myself, and I did feel a little worried at times, but Iguess I was young and somewhat careless :D.

I knew the robbers must live in the area. They probably saw me drive by everyday and laughed in their heads.

Oh well, crimes exist everywhere, but if you choose the area carefully, there's a lesser chance of it happening to you.

Take care and good luck.

I know the Houston area pretty well but the same rules apply to any city - explore to find the "right kind" of neighborhood.

Any big city - (could apply to any country as well) - has its good areas and its bad areas. Houston is no different than, say, Chicago, Los Angeles, or Miami.
