We were robbed with guns in Houston!!!

I came back to the States with my wife on the 3rd of this month, and on the 12th (Monday last week) we're robbed with guns at night when we were moving our stuffs into the apartment we just newly leased and started living in on the 9th. I couldn't believe it!

The robbers were 2 black males. They didn't look unusual at all in the beginning. When I first saw them walking into the complex I thought they were just tenants like us. Then they walked really fast and easily into our apartment as we left the door opened while we're moving stuffs in. While I was about to walk out again to my car at the parking lot to move our stuffs in for the last time or so, they were approaching to the door and took out their guns, then I realised immediately it was our turn to be robbed. While one was coming in and pointing his gun at me, the other stayed out at the door to watch out for a few seconds then came in and pointed his gun at me too. I was horrified more than she was because it happened so fast that she couldn't realized immediately to get terrified and also because after that they didn't point their guns at her or got close to her at all, but just kept doing it at me only. And also fortunately, all they wanted were just mainly cash which I carried about 300 bucks in my wallet. The wallet was taken away right away by the one who came in first. Then this guy also walked around the apartment to search more; he took her phone newly bought 2 days earlier when he found it left in the bedroom and all our keys left on the kitchen counter. He didn't take my phone because he didn't find it. So we had one phone left to call the police later...

Other than that we have been enjoying so much our new life together in America although we've been so busy so far going around visiting friends and shopping... However, we still need to move out of Houston partly because there has been too much crime in the city. When I was still in Vietnam, I received from the mayor of the city a generic e-mail saying due to the effort of the city police force crime has been reducing remarkably compared to the time when a lot of victims of the Katrina started moving to Houston from Louisiana. I have no idea about it. The other day, when I went into a bank to check my report of stolen cards at the robbery, I was told that they've received reports like mine everyday.

Today I took her to the airport for her flight to Ohio as we've decided to move to Cleveland, Ohio; her sister has been there for a long time. I like her to get there by plane, so she went there first. Then I'll drive by there from Houston in the next few days as I still have a car that I like to keep using.

Well at least you still have your lives. Items and money can be replaced.

But imo any big city you live in will always have big city problems. Learn from your experience and be more wary.

My Le,

I'm angry for you and your family, for your loss and the dramatization ordeal you have to experience. Fastforward, let's pack and move to OH. Now you're about 8hrs closer to Philly :) and the great northeast where we have also big crime issues :) Living in a big city has its pros and cons. Traffic, crimes, housing, job availability, wages vs. greater access to Asian food sources, better selection of entertainment, more variety on restaurants, public transportation, shopping. BUT, getting robbed on the first few days living in America is def. NOT on anyone's to-do list. Be calm and explain to your honey that it is NOT normal, and please, never let anyone tells you it's NORMAL to get robbed, by all means. Don't let the criminals desensitized your feeling and anger toward crimes and sinful way. Be outraged and let it be known like you did here. Crimes here are just like in VN, but they use GUNS instead of knives. Losing your wallet is bad, headache, and hassles. I notice you said they took all your keys as well? Call the Locksmith? Cancel cellphones? Call rental insurance company to file a lost? Moving truck company for loss in transist? Call the apt. rental office for safety and security issue? Ask them for financial assistance to recoop your loss? File a complain to the Mayor's office? Or do what you are doing, MOVE! My uncle just called last weekend, who lives in Houston asked me to come and visit him this year. With this news, I am seriously rethinking the trip and might have to invite him to Philly instead. Hmmm!!!!

Again, I would feel very violated by this, because these POS attacked my family and my ability to keep it secured and safe. Stay strong and keep yourself busy, Kim and I feel your loss and not sure why but very angry toward the situation. But we believe you will recover in no time once you move to OH.

Best of luck and thank you for sharing your story with us....

My Le,

Sorry to hear that. I hope your wife is taking it ok.

Can I ask what area of Houston you are in? I also live in Houston, but in the southern outskirts. Crime, while still present, seems to be a bit less of an issue in my area.

I bet they kept staring at you because here in Texas, there was a high probability that you were also armed (from their point of view).

Good luck in OH, I understand it is a pretty nice place to live.

My Le,

Sorry to about your bad ordeal. But it's a good thing that you and your wife are ok. It could have been worst. We live in Austin, Texas and I hear crimes like this happen once in a while. Best of luck in OH.

Grrrr F###### low life's.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

My Le, man man man ... What a story! I live in Hosuton, bro. If you do not mind, can you tell me the name of the complex? I am mainly just curious. Eversince Houston opens her arms for the Katrina people from New Orleans, the crime in this city skyockets. Nonetheless, Houston is a big city so crime is inevitible. It just sucks that it happened to you. Welcome home and stay safe.

I used to be indecisive. Now I am just not sure ...

The name of the complex is Greyfield Apartments located on Bissonnet, which is on the East side of Beltway 8 and very close to it.

Thank you all for your attention. We are very OK now. And wish this won't happen again. Now it's very clear to me that Houston is not a safe place. Tomorrow I'll drive to Cleveland and wish won't have to come back here to live in again. I still have relatives in here; I wish them peace and tell them don't go out at night. For Houstonians: good luck, the poors would get better, the addicts get cured, the smarts and the priviledgeds get smarter and wealthier to help fight poverty and ignorance harder... so all could get safer and happier.
