I have read inumerous posts about this question and cant seem to find the right answer for our case. My dad, who is self-employed will be my husband's joint sponsor. He files taxes jointly with my mom but wont be using her income. How do I determine his current annual income?? Is it the gross income stated on his 1099 form from the latest tax year (2014) OR a specific amount AFTER taxes are taken out?

I also need help on this exact question! Anyone help!

I asked on Facebook and someone said its gross income before taxes. The amount on your W2 or 1099. Lets see if more people can confirm

As far as I know, it's what he expects to make this year. It's not a specific number on his tax forms. In my case, my joint sponsor was self employed on 2014, this year he is not. So what should he put as his current annual income?

So would it be the part that says total income or the part that says wages, salaries, etc?

For self employed it is their total income on their 1099. It should still be their gross income, before expenses. The only way for a self employed person to prove income, however, is their tax return. This is unlike a salaried employee who can do so with a letter from their employer or pay stubs.
