Hello All,

Natalia is coming over next Wednesday. I found out she does not need her SSN to get a marriage license, and we want to get started on the AOS ASAP. My question is this: After we are married,

1. How does she go about changing her name here, when she does not really have any records here?

2. What will changing her name to mine do to the AOS, EAD, AP, and SSN processes? I am unsure as to best sequence. Get married and change name first, and do all the other stuff after, or get married, do all the filing, and then change name? Wouldn't that require revisions to filing?

Thanks again!

As far as I know, when you get married, you write your new name on your marriage license application, as well as on your marriage certificate at the ceremony. You don't need to do anything else to change your name 'cos whatever is on your marriage certificate will be your name change. At least that's how it is for my State (Minnesota). It's better to change your name before filing for AOS so you don't delay the process by requesting a name change after you've sent in your application and documents. So, get married first, then everything else comes next. That's what I did. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Yes, this helps a lot. From what I can tell, it is indeed better to change you name along with the marriage as the first order of business. It seems that the marriage certificatee showing the name change is the very prrof that most, if not all, authorities require to supplement Natalia's Russian passport containing the I-94 stamp. Getting the name changed right off the bat circumvents hassles later with changing names at the SS office, for the drivers's license, banking, lease, AOS forms, school registrations, etc. Better to start off with a clean name change before all those things are handled.

Depends on where you get married. My marriage license/certifcate (license becomes the certificate once you get married here) doesn't have any place for my new married name. So everywhere I go to change it that has to see it, they have to ask what I'm changing my name too >.< Bleh
