Bad Credit

I am in the process of naturalization. Hopefully, by next year, i will be a citizen.

I will marry my overstayer boyfriend and have him Adjust his status. I believe he's eligible since he came to US witb a work visa.

My question is: Can we adjust his status if I, the soon to be USC have a really really bad credit history. I mean lowest of the low.

I just started to contact them and make payment arrangements so hopefully it is better in a year. Since my credit is really bad, it needs more than a year to get it fixed. So, will my bad credit hinder us from adjusting his status?

I don't think credit history itself will be an issue. But if you owe back taxes, you'll have to have those paid or at least show a payment plan is underway when you file the affidavit of support for him.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know that having very bad credit won't get either of you very far in your lives together. PLEASE, if you haven't already, check out this resource. It's the consumer credit counseling service, I assume they have one in every state. IT'S FREE, and the people are very helpful. http://www.cccs.net/services/budget-credit-counseling I found one in Dallas for you, but I believe if you call, it doesn't matter where you're calling from (I could be wrong).

As long as it's free I think that it's a good idea. As a former debt collector, I can tell you that most credit counselling services are a bust. Anything that's been charged off to collections can usually be negotiated down to between 50-70% of the original debt (many will drop interest payments). If you are reasonable and explain everything usually the debt collectors will work with you. Yes, some are ruthless, angry people. However, don't be a pushover, speak with them and negotiate. Don't be afraid to ask for a supervisor.

But overall, no. Credit doesn't come into play.

"Most" being the keyword. But I've used this service myself, and if you research the service it's incredibly widely used. I would never reach out to someone about it if I even suspected it might be a scam. I truly want to help this person because overcoming bad credit (or like myself, starting with no credit) it can be confusing and I can trust these people will be able to help her.

I also just found out i have bad credit, i went onto credit karma and found i had 4 bills from two years ago that i didn't receive. I immediately called the collections, and the doctor paid it off and they disputed since they didn't even contact me once about it and i had no idea, and said they have removed it off my credit so hopefully it will be fixed. Welcome to USA! :D

That's what I'm worried about. I'm already in the process of trying to work on my credit but i can't really pay everything in one year. I don't have anybody to Co sponsor with me. I don't have back taxes or anything. I read somewhere that there's a possibility of being denied if i can't 100% support him. When i filed for income tax this year, my annual salary was 30k and i just got a raise but it's still not really enough to pay my debt completely.

What kind of debt are you talking about? They care about public charges

damn, lol. I have been reading a lot about credit the past week, I recommend meeting with a credit specialist who can help you build a plan to rebuild your credit. On CK there is a section that says public charges, if there is nothing in there you are ok for USCIS

Start with a phone consultation so they can know exactly what you need from them. They even have workshops in my area.

If you have outstanding IRS tax due, financial litigation, or convicted fraud charges

(like using bad/stolen checks/credit cards), then it could be a problem.

But otherwise, just bad credit score shouldn't cause too much trouble.

However, are you making enough (around $20,000 a year if its just 2 of you)

to sponsor him?
