Roy Moore: Gay marriage ruling will lead to persecution of Christians

The U.S. Supreme Court just made it easier for Christians to be persecuted, the chief justice of Alabama’s Supreme Court said Sunday.

Speaking before the Kimberly Church of God congregation, Chief Justice Roy Moore told congregants that the justices in the highest court erred, just as they did when they allowed slavery, according to a report from The Associated Press.

“Just who do they think they are when one person can reverse 200-and-something years of precedent in our country and thousands of years of precedent in western civilization,” Moore reportedly said, adding, “Welcome to the new world. It’s just changed for you Christians. You are going to be persecuted according to the U.S Supreme Court dissents,” Moore said.

In February, Moore ordered the state’s probate judges not to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples because, he reasoned, an order from federal judge Callie Granade overturning the state’s ban did not force them to issue the licenses. As a result of the Supreme Court’s ruling last Friday, two counties in the state have said they will no longer give licenses to anyone.

“Is there such a thing as morality anymore? Sodomy for centuries was declared to be against the laws of nature and nature’s God. And now if you say that in public, and I guess I am, am I violating somebody’s civil rights? Have we elevated morality to immorality? Do we call good, bad? What are we Christians to do?” Moore asked parishioners, according to the report.

As Christians, Moore went on to say, “[w]e are to love our fellow man and if we love our fellow man what are we [to] do but tell them when there is sin, because sin is something you are supposed to hate.”

“When they create it as a national right, a fundamental right, what are we do?” he asked.

On Monday, Moore recused himself from an order from the state Supreme Court that he interpreted as prohibiting probate judges from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples for the next 25 days, according to a report from AL.com. The order, Moore said, according to the report, stalls the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges last Friday.

This order follows another one issued by the state court in March that ordered a halt to same-sex marriages in the state after Granade ordered Mobile’s probate judge to issue licenses to same-sex couples.

In May, Granade issued a clarifying order that her ruling applied statewide but stayed the decision pending the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges. The March order followed a request for a writ of mandamus from the Alabama Policy Institute and the Alabama Citizens Action Program the previous month.

even a 'tardo of the lowest iq rung

knows there's a separation of Church and State,

yet

he went into a Church to stir up the muck.

grrr.

I was in a Church Sunday as well - my men's group from my church decided to get out to a LGBT-focused episcopal church this sunday and have a looksee. Nothing new to see, really, just Christians celebrating on the liturgical calendar.

a dissent isn't the prevailing opinion, so i had to clean up my shirt after the spit-take.

this fella really is a 'tardo.

I like reading dissents, too, but to use one as cannon fodder, in the hopes to create an incendiary riot?

No, just no. Bad Form.

[this was an elected Judge, right?]

Probably -- this is the South. I disagree with the election of judges, and grew up in a state where they were all appointed. Judges could focus on, oh, being judges instead of currying favour with the electorate. These were not appointments for life. I now live in a state where trial court judges are elected. I think it's utterly bizarre.

This is a judge who was removed from office In 2003 for refusing to remove a monument of the 10 Commandments in a government building. He clearly has no understanding of the constitutional concept of separation of church and state and deserves to be impeached and removed from office if he defies the Supreme Court on same-sex marriage.
