Interview ID Question...

My application date for citizenship is August 6th. My British passport expires August 8th. My question is, am I going to need my passport as ID during the interview? I have left the US for only three days during the last eight years - and two of those days were spent partially on US soil. Am I going to have to renew my passport, or can I wait until after the Oath and just apply for a US one?

Thanks,

Steve

You are supposed to use your British passport to enter the UK. If you never intend to go to the UK again, I guess that doesn't matter. I would wonder if it's harder to get a British passport when your old one has expired though...

I believe there's kind of a grey area where entering the UK with a US passport would be seen as denouncing your British citizenship - someone please correct me if that's wrong.

I am sure you'll need proof of ID for the interview, but there are probably other acceptable forms of ID.

Actually, thinking about it, I wonder if you're required as a permanent resident to keep a valid passport from the country of citizenship. In my personal opinion, regardless of that, it seems like it's in your best interest.

Bring your expired passport to the interview. You do not have to have it renewed if all you are trying to do is get US citizenship. The CIS could care less whether you have a valid foreign passport or not. My Russian passport has been expired for years and I never got around to renewing it. I applied for US citizenship after my Russian passport has already expired. You only need your foreign passport when you travel to the country that issued that passport. The US has no issues with you having an expired foreign passport whatsoever.

Your green card will be your ID. I brought my expired Canadian passport to the interview & oath ceremony, but no one ever asked to see it.
