So, true story, I grew up in a Canadian gun-owning family, in the middle of the boondocks. I still have never once seen my stepfather's guns. They were kept locked up in a hidden place in the house, with trigger locks in locked cases. The ammunition was hidden in another part of the house, in a lockbox. I never knew where either gun or ammo was. In my community, most families probably owned guns or had access to them. I never knew a single person who died or was even injured by a gun. There were no guns accidents.

I once dated a boy from Oklahoma, however. His family kept guns for home protection, unlocked and loaded in case of emergency. His father brought home an adorable baby raccoon that had lost its mama. He ended up bottle raising the raccoon, my Oklahoma boyfriend, and it slept on his pillow and brought all its shiny treasures under his pillow. One day they saw the raccoon reaching for the nice, shiny handgun and his dad immediately locked the guns into a desk drawer for safety. The raccoon saw this and, in the middle of the night that night, my Oklahoma boyfriend woke up to a gun going off six inches from his head, discharged into his pillow. The raccoon had unlocked the desk drawer to get the shiny gun and bring it to his shiny cache.

My ex could have been a statistic had the raccoon shot six inches to the left. It could have been his head and not the pillow exploding. That he wasn't was a damn miracle.

Most of the people killed by privately owned firearms in America are killed in idiotic accidents like 'the raccoon stole my gun' (admittedly it's usually a toddler or a teenager, not a raccoon), not 'the mass murderer came to my school or church today.' Gun deaths should be rare, even if everyone owns one. That they're not says a lot about the way firearms are handled and considered by Americans. They're not a powerful weapon, they're considered no more dangerous than an alarm system. And that's why there's a problem.

Met in 2010 on a forum for a mutual interest. Became friends.
2011: Realized we needed to evaluate our status as friends when we realized we were talking about raising children together.

2011/2012: Decided we were a couple sometime in, but no possibility of being together due to being same sex couple.

June 26, 2013: DOMA overturned. American married couples ALL have the same federal rights at last! We can be a family!

June-September, 2013: Discussion about being together begins.

November 13, 2013: Meet in person to see if this could work. It's perfect. We plan to elope to Boston, MA.

March 13, 2014 Married!

May 9, 2014: Petition mailed to USCIS

May 12, 2014: NOA1.
October 27, 2014: NOA2. (5 months, 2 weeks, 1 day after NOA1)
October 31, 2014: USCIS ships file to NVC (five days after NOA2) Happy Halloween for us!

November 18, 2014: NVC receives our case (22 days after NOA2)

December 17, 2014: NVC generates case number (50 days after NOA2)

December 19, 2014: Receive AOS bill, DS-261. Submit DS-261 (52 days after NOA2)

December 20, 2014: Pay AOS Fee

January 7, 2015: Receive, pay IV Fee

January 10, 2015: Complete DS-260

January 11, 2015: Send AOS package and Civil Documents
March 23, 2015: Case Complete at NVC. (70 days from when they received docs to CC)

May 6, 2015: Interview at Montréal APPROVED!

May 11, 2015: Visa in hand! One year less one day from NOA1.

not to be rude but i'm not going to watch that. try and take a step out of yourself and think about the fact that ONE person pulled the trigger repeatedly and killed nine people in a church. no one else. the pastor didn't murder these people, 'white people' didn't kill them, 'black people' didn't kill them. seriously, makes no sense to use your typical 'black people suck' argument with this one.

The thug culture

i think it's important to remember that the people who were murdered appear to be the strict sort of 'turn the other cheek' christians. that's why the whole gun debate is really dumb to have concerning this church. obviously nonviolence and humility were their highest ideals. gun nuts are screaming like everyone should be forced to own and carry a weapon, that's the only way we'll all be safe. people do have the right to not carry if it doesn't align with their ideals..and choosing not to carry does not mean that one is more deserving of a violent death.

damn dude, marvin called it last night. you might at least try not to be so predictable. if you're not going to have a conversation about the incident at hand, i'm done talking to you. further, if you're going to put words in my mouth (that i've never come close to saying) it only reinforces what big dog said above, you're full of it and you've got nothing.

Actually it is the guns.

We have become a society that has become obsessed with firearms. To the point that some people can't even leave their homes without having a couple of weapons strapped to their own bodies. Guns aren't more restricted, if that were true we wouldn't have people killing their whole families and then offing themselves. Folks aren't about using their brains or even fists to resolve issues. It's pretty much kill or be killed, even when it's not. Not to mention guns are nothing what they were like 30 years ago. They're bigger and more destructive. Also, guns are idolized. In movies, books, tv. Every rapper that folks claim made the thug culture, those dude's model for it? Capone, Gotti, Scarface. It goes back decades.

The problem is, we care more about owning guns than saving lives. Because now, it's I need a gun to protect myself and family. Folks are more than willing to accept the bloodshed, as long as it doesn't end up on their doorstep and infringes on their rights. That's why it's a shame that so many people die in these instances, and we can't even have a decent conversation about gun control.

The thug culture

There's no point talking about this with you.

It's what they do to tell themselves it's not an issue in "their" community. Lib can't talk about this without interjecting something about black people into it simply because he lacks empathy for anything darker than a suntan.

The thug culture

You do realize gun culture was around before the so called "thug culture." The Wild West ring any bells to you? Gun slingers? That thug below sure doesn't look black. By the way, when are we meeting again? You keep dodging me. Trying to meet you in real life.

In the last couple posts I noticed the statement "gun violence has been increasing". I just want to remind everyone that its been decreasing since 1993 at a pretty steady rate. The only thing that has been increasing is the rate of high profile killings.

I also don't agree that guns are bigger and more destructive than in the past. Firearms technology hasn't really improved much since say the 1960s. In fact, if you look at how firearms have progressed in the last 30s years the focus has been on making them smaller and lighter.
