Hee hee.. (Hubby says I'm stirring the perverbial pot here).

Hubby & I were snooping around on the US Passport pages (he needs to get one), and I was asking.. under what conditions could a US citizen go to Cuba, so we looked it up, AND in the process learned that a permanent resident of the US is not allowed to go to Cuba.. (that will hopefully be me in a few short/long months).

I've been teasing him all day about my permanent residency meaning I have to give up my Cuba Dreams.. and Havana for that matter..

Hee hee..

Anything else I gotta give up for the love of my life??????

Many Americans goto Cuba for holidays. I belive they dont exit directluy from the USA to Cuba, but first goto another country first, then goto Cuba.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Ahhhh... and that's what we were saying until we read this on the Department of State site... which states pretty clearly that'd be illegal - no cigars for you!! tee hee:)

"The Regulations require that persons subject to U.S. jurisdiction be licensed to engage in any travel-related transactions related to travel to, from, and within Cuba. Transactions related to tourist travel are not licensable. This restriction includes tourist travel to Cuba from or through a third country such as Mexico or Canada. U.S. law enforcement authorities have increased enforcement of these regulations at U.S. airports and pre-clearance facilities in third countries. Travelers who fail to comply with Department of Treasury regulations will face civil penalties and criminal prosecution upon return to the United States."

Oh, how funny. C. and I were just talking about this, as his brother and his fiancée recently returned from a trip to Cuba and were telling him enthusiastically that he should take me on a trip there.

"She can't go there. She's American."

"Why?"

"Because they're still stubborn over the 60s."

Good to know. I always thought that if a US Citizen flew from another Country, it was ok.

I also read that they will ask Cuban Customs not to stamp their passports.

I've been to Cuba once. The beaches were nice, the History is great. I found it a very sad place though. Not many happy people there.

When my husband was here visiting he commented about the huge "VISIT CUBA!" billboards along the highway. :)

Emancipation, it's funny you brought this up because I was just talking to someone about it today thinking it was okay if you just went through a 3rd country.

From what I understand, it is not illegal for Americans to travel to Cuba; there is a ban on U.S. citizens spending money in Cuba though. However, just WHO in America can travel to Cuba is severely limited by the U.S. government. As far as I know, that's limited to the following: Journalists, official Congressional visits, persons engaged in educational purposes, and family visits by Cuban-Americans. In all cases, there are specific limits on on the transport of money and goods, as well as the frequency of visits (that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone here). There are also limits on what may be brought back from Cuba as well.

When the U.S. government gives the "okay" to travel to Cuba, the ban on spending money in Cuba is temporarily lifted for the duration of the trip. I'm sure, however, that USCIS will be interested in how much was spent though, and probably look over what was bought.

So while it is not technically illegal for Americans to visit Cuba, the "allowed" list is pretty narrow. The "average American" could probably not visit Cuba whenever he or she wanted to for whatever reason. He or she would most likely have to be of a certain profession or within a Cuban-American family (and be able to prove that as well). Regardless, I am betting there are many hoops to jump through and in many cases, it's probably not worth the aggrevation if you're an American.

If I am wrong about this information, then please correct me. However, I have looked this up in several places and therefore, I believe this to be accurate. :)
