Tipping

If I am paying for my taxi/dinner/hairdresser/whatever with a credit card and I add a tip into the total amount - does the person who served me get the same amount of money as if I had paid cash?

A waiter friend told me he preferred cash tips because management skimmed off the top -- this really bothered me because when I tip, I want the people who served me to receive it, NOT the management.

At my last server gig, the manager required us to kick in 10% of our tips for the cooks and the bussers. They then used our (cash) tip cut to pay the (illegal) cooks--sucky! I used to slip my cut directly to the guys when I could. (I also reported the employer and quit after a few weeks once I figured the score)

The reason I tip in cash instead of on my card (which I use to pay for everything) is a simple little rebellion. Eveyone prefers cash!

When we cashed out each night, we exchanged our credit card tips for cash from the register--I'm not sure how the mgmt could skim in your friend's situation.

The way servers here are taxed (can't speak for enforcement of this in other industries outside food/bar) is that the server's sales are totalled for the day and the figure reported to the IRS- tips are assumed at 8% of gross sales, and added to the server's reported (salary) income.

I hope I've explained that well.

Wow. That's one uppity waiter. I'm a good tipper but I tip the way i want to... cash or CC. Whatever is convenient to me. I don't want to be involved with inter work problems.

I have heard of establishments skimming off of wait staff (or whatever) tips, and they'll say its to cover bank charges for the machine or something. When we use a card to pay for something, food, hair stylist, etc...we usually tip cash. And yes, a lot of restaurants and bars will pool the tip money and take a % for non-tipped staff, like bussers and cooks etc.

I don't think it's uppity to say that he prefers cash at all - that's a little strange that you would say that. Maybe you meant something else. He's earned the tip, why shouldn't he keep it? The waiters/bartenders I know will always give some of their tips to either the person working the bar (if it's in a non-tip position, like at CPK where they just mix the drinks or pour the wine/beer for the servers, not directly for the patrons) or the bussers, ets. If you're friends with a bartender/waiter, I think you're more likely to tip cash (or tip a little more) just because you know how hard they work.

Well, I don't work in the service industry, but personally I always tip 20%. I also tend to do it in cash too. I'm a server's wet dream...

I also tip 20%, unless the service is unusally bad or something goes awry. Like one time when my fiancee and I were eating out, there was a fly in her salad. No, I am not kidding. She was (understandly) grossed out. Because of this and the extremely slow service we endured, I took some off the tip. I didn't take a LOT off, but I did lower it in order to show my displeasure. I've never stiffed a waiter or waitress.

We had a waitress who got us our drinks and then seemed to forget about us....I seriously think she went for her break.

Servers tip out COOKS? That's news to me.

I'm a chef and I've NEVER gotten a tip from anyone. Thats not a common practice. At least in fine dining establishments...... lucky cooks. ;) Servers make WAY more money than chefs do and all they do is hand you the food I cooked! hehe

It is common practice to tip out bussers, runners, managers, and bartenders though. Even with cash they are supposed to give out percentages to everyone. So I suggest just tipping in whatever manner is more convienient for you.

I'm currently moonlighting as a server for a major chain and there's no skimming by anyone. What they probably mean is that when you tip on the credit card, there is a record of the amount, so the server can't under report their tips to the IRS, which is something that servers are notorious for doing.

No, she said that tips were skimmed to *pay* illegal cooks. My husband was working at a place that was doing the same thing. All tips were collected by the manager, and then servers would only get back a certain percentage of that at the end of the week, after the other service people were tipped out AND illegal kitchen staff were paid. Really sh!tty practice, not to mention illegal.

When I was waiting tables, I always preferred cash tips.:innocent:
