I remember reading awhile ago that marketers have begun to mimick people talking about their favorite products in public - where people walking by them or overhearing them think it's just two regular people having a conversation when in fact they are actors paid to promote a particular product. Supposedly this type of subversive advertising really works.

Have you read Pattern Recognition? The book is actually about that kind of subversive marketing. William Gibson started off as a science fiction writer - he's now moved on to speculative literary fiction, with a definite focus on new media trends.

I didn't like the novel all that much, but I found the ideas interesting. Apparently that sort of advertising is supposed to create a sense of exclusivity - usually by mimicking what you already have in certain subcultures. The theory is that you see an inexplicable poster ad, for example, overhear some people talking about it - as a result of which you're 'inspired' to find out more about it.

I believe MySpace (Which is now a community / marketing machine) does this.

I haven't read it, but I'll have to put in on my queue - it sounds interesting. I did read a book back in college that was written back in the 50's called, Hidden Persuaders. Subversive advertising was a rather new concept at the time. As I recall, a trend started where marketing firms began to recruit psych majors to find new ways to get people to respond to advertising.

Case in point. Back when South Park started I found I enjoyed it more when it didn't have the huge following that subsequently developed. That was nothing to do with the content changing, but with the loss of exclusivity.

The same thing happens with real estate. People find 'cool areas' to live, like Camden in North London. By the time the 'suits' move in, the original people who enjoyed that exclusivity have already moved on to someone else.

I have watched practically every tv show at least once because I work in television.

Having said that I hardly ever make a point to regularly watch any of them. I don't follow CSI, American Idol, Heroes, Grey Anatomy (which I actively hate), which makes me a bit of a freak among my friends and colleagues.

Oooh tell us why!

I like the show, but I loathe the woman who plays Grey. Her face bothers me

I've seen Lost and House. That's it. I don't watch TV.... these are on DVD.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

You see...what really ticks me off about most one-hour drama shows is the acting. Nobody acts or speaks like that in real life! People don't usually come up with quick, clever, witty one-liners or say something super-dramatic, leaving the opposite party speechless as they walk away. It just doesn't happen...but in these shows, it's an everyday occurrence.

Then there's the sitcoms, which are probably even worse than the one-hour drama shows! Sitcom plotlines are formulaic pieces of ####### that anybody with a kernel of a brain could figure out ahead of time, laughtracks are just plain sad, and the gender stereotyping for both men and women (especially men though) is incredibly insulting.

Just once I'd like to see a show that doesn't rely on hackneyed gimmicks and writing or over-the-top melodrama. This must be the reason I refuse to watch all the terrible shows available on the networks and cable today.

I hate every single character - even the one Sandra Oh plays, and I normally think she is great as an actress. They are whiney and I don't care about any of their problems and I seem to vapid to stupid to make coffee much less perform brain surgery . I guess I like the mean short black woman

And Dr. McDreamy? Ladies, the dude is like 4'6"!

I must admit, I really dig cheesy television at times. My work tends to be very cerebral and it is so nice to have a mindless outlet sometimes. I used to watch Charmed and Supernatural religiously. Until I met my hubby I had never watched any of the CSI shows, NCIS, The Unit, Criminal Minds, etc. etc. etc. Before hubby, I restricted my tv viewing to shows usually watched by prepubescent girls :) Oh yeah, and American Idol of course!!!

Then, this past summer, we lived in an rv while we looked for a house to buy. We only picked up 2 tv channels .... and it was a VERY SMALL RV, so I ended up either watching what he watched or listening to it from the other room. Watched a lot of CSI, NCIS, The Unit and Criminal Minds ... and still watch those together even though we have a house now and cable tv
