Anyone who got medical done at Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Please share experience.

I booked an appointment by phone for City center Apollo Hospital at Ellisbridge, Ahmdabad for 20th June.

- Our interview is 31 July so the lady on phone insisted that don't get it done so soon as it is valid 6 months only. I told her we will travel to USA in 3 - 4 months time.

- Then she booked for 8 AM even when I was requesting around 9-10 AM as we have to travel from another place 150 Kms away. She was adamant and said they will not be responsible for later time if the doctor goes away and your medical is not done !

- She took everybody's name and contact information ( phone no) and dictated all the things that we need to bring. Following is the list she asked us to bring -

1) Original passport + 2 photocopies

2) Interview letter + 2 photocopies (so that makes it 3 copies). It is okay to take a print out of email P4 letter.

3) Photographs - 6 (indian style passport photo with white background - I am a little unsure about this so I am going to carry both indian style as well as USA style i.e 2*2 white background)

4) Previous medical records, vaccination records for child + 2 copies of vaccination records.

5) Black pen

6) USA address - The address where we will go once we are in USA.

Then she said this list is for each person. So everyone carry their own pens :)

Also I asked if we get the reports same day. She said if everything is normal in the test results, adults can get report on same day but the report for child will be available on Monday i.e. after one working day ( Don't know why - Kids don't need blood tests and x rays)

Hope this helps !

Here are the details of the medical. The paperwork required is as per my previous post.

first things first - The place - Apollo hospital, Ellisbridge is a really dirty hospital - No cleanliness at all ! The rest rooms are dirty and the place doesn't even have air conditioning. You will see plenty of split AC's displaying 20 deg C on their temp display but they don't work. It was really hot ! I would recommend getting medicals done somewhere else if possible. And on top of all this, the staff is rude !

The actual medicals -

First they make you fill up one page form for each family members and then send you to first floor to fill up additional forms (Name, BMB number, address in USA, age) as per your passport. They measure height and weight, send you for an eye exam. The eye exam takes a minute! I wonder, why do they even do it. Then you have a consultation with the doctor and physical exam which takes about 10 minutes. In between each exam, there's plenty of waiting time because they don't have a proper system of token number or first come first serve. So make sure that you fight for your place in the queue otherwise someone will take advantage and you will end up wasting time.

After the consultation, the doctor gives a list of vaccines to be taken. We had previous records of all vaccines and even then, they insisted that we take MMR again. Only two doses are required in a lifetime. Other than that, TDap and flu are mandatory and if you don't have varicella vaccine (chicken pox) then that is also given.

Blood is drawn for the blood test at ground floor and x ray is done on the ground floor as well. X ray and blood test is not done for kids. Only skin test for TB is done. Billing takes almost an hour - seperate billing for vaccines and hospital charges etc. So you have to get in line twice. It is good to have someone who is willing to do this part for you, so that you can save time.

It took 3 hours to finish the whole process. The dirty hospital and non working AC's made it feel like 5-6 hours.

The reports are given same day after 4 PM if all goes well. They call for extra tests if there is problem with any of the tests. For kid's skin test, you will have to go again 48 hrs after to show the result on the kid's arm and then the report will be given that evening.

I would not recommend anyone to go to this hospital for medicals. It was a nightmare.

They call everyone at 8:00 AM and it is better to be there at 8. We travelled from Baroda and were there at 7:30. The main reception desk starts giving out forms to fill as soon as it is 8:00. The cost might not get as high as 7 to 8 thousand for one person. We were 3 people and it cost us around 11,000 for all three of us. She should be done in around 4-5,000. However, it is always advisable to carry extra cash or credit card just in case.

We had a lady doctor who dealt with all men and women who had medicals that day. I am not sure if there is a different doctor or the same doctor each day. Anyhow, there is no need to worry as they do not perform the complete physical checkup. So doesn't matter if it's a male or a female doctor. Vaccines are given by female nurse. X ray was done by male radiologist.
