Can someone explain to me the whole OPK process?

I havent bought one, but I want to know how it works first, cause with my crazy schedule I want to know if it's possible for me to complete the whole thing...

Any advice will be appreciated...

Ana,

Here's a link about OPKs

http://www.babyhopes.com/articles/ovulation-test-work.html

Basically, you start using it a few days before you think you will ovulate. They usually give you an estimate on what day to start using them depending on how long your monthly cycle is. They give the best results when used in the afternoon or evening, not first thing in the morning. But if you read the link it should explain it better. :)

I read a book...fiction, but I can't remember the name of it about a couple that was trying and trying and trying and couldn't. It went into all the IVF and treatments and all that. I don't know...it sounds really scary and painful. I think if we can't - and we can't for like...a long time...we'll adopt. I was adopted and would have no problem with it.

I don't know all that much about IVF. I do know the medication you have to take just to produce eggs is hard on you. I was taking pills every day for a week and giving myself a shot every day for a week. The hormones really mess you up. It's a big roller coaster of emotions. I've talked to Javier about adoption but he's not interested in that. It wouldn't bother me at all but he has issues with it. I think it goes back to being a macho man and thinking he has to have a child that's his, biologically. So, we'll start with IVF and if that doesn't work, maybe I can convince him to adopt.

My mom has recently opened up to me about her struggle to have kids (she couldn't) and my dad's complete reluctance to adopt. Like Javier, he was AGAINST it. He wanted his own kids...ya know? I don't know how she finally changed his mind, but they didn't adopt me til they were 35 so it MUST have taken some time. I guess after a while it was CLEAR that she couldn't have kids..despite any treatment or whatever, and I guess his desire for kids was greater than his pride...so they adopted.

Stewart SAYS he's fine with it, but I wonder, when push comes to shove, will he still feel that way? It's easy to say when you aren't even trying..."Oh sure, I'd adopt" but...when the time really comes, will he still feel that way??

I should figure out what that book was because it was REALLY good!!!

my parents had problems having a baby.. so they adopted me and my twin.

I am the opposite. i want to have my own baby. I have been down the adoption road with trying to adopt this little baby. I refuse to go down that road again. the mama changed her mind and it broke my heart.

OMG! I think I might have actually ovulated this month. I had some twinges on my right side yesterday like I used to have when I actually did ovulate. I have one of those ovulation things that tests your saliva. So, just for the heck of it, I got it out this morning and tested. I got a fern-like pattern. Doesn't that mean you have ovulated, will ovulate, etc? I don't know what to think. Maybe I'm just getting excited over nothing. I wish there were some way to find out for sure if I did in fact ovulate.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

Charity-That's great!

I found this online about the ferning

"When you see these patterns you will know that ovulation is likely to occur in the next 24 to 72 hours. However you are able to see through using this method, your estrogen levels increase daily." http://thefertilityshop.com/saliva-ovulation-predictor.htm

The only way that I know of to see if you really ovulated is to take your morning waking temp every morning, and the day after ovulation it will go up by at least .2 degrees, and then stay sustained over your lower temp on the day you ovulated. Usually though it's best to start temping on the first day of your period so by the time ovulation comes, you can see a pattern forming in temps. Usually the temp going up in the 2nd half of the monthly cycle kind of proves that ovulation occurred. If you have a digital thermometer at home, you could try using it starting tomorrow morning when you first wake up. Then use it for a few more days to compare temps. You have to do it at the same time every morning though, before you get out of bed. You may still have a chance to see the temp go up the day after ovulation, if you are ovulating tomorrow or the next day. If you are ovulating today, it might be too late to temp and see a difference.

Sorry for the mouthful! :P

No problem. It actually helped me out. I guess I should use the test again tomorrow to see if I still have the pattern or not. I never imagined I would ovulate since I haven't been for so long. That's one reason I haven't bothered with OPK's or temping. I didn't expect it to happen so I didn't see any point in taking the time and effort to chart. I can't imagine I would have an estrogen surge if I weren't actually ovulating but maybe I would. I guess I'm just going to have to start charting and temping to find out for sure. Well if I did happen to ovulate, we should have "hit the nail on the head" as you all have been saying. But since I wasn't expecting it I didn't stand on my head or anything like I usually do. We'll see what happens. If not this month, maybe my body is finally straightening itself out and it will happen soon.

Ok…

So, does really standing on your head works??? LOL

Rob is going to think I went completely crazy if I start doing that! I decided that I was going to try out the Chasteberry pills, a friend adviced to start taking them the day I ovulate and until the day my period comes (supposedly it extends the lutheal phase), gonna try that this month. I don’t think my problem is actually ovulating; it might me more of the little egg not sticking to where it’s supposed to go.

Thanks for the info Stina (will get the silly trinket just to take it off my mind…LOL).

Good luck in the baby making ladies… :)

Apparently standing on your head doesn't work. I'm proof. I always try to elevate my bottom afterwards just in case though. I don't actually stand on my head. But I didn't even elevate my bottom this time since I wasn't expecting to ovulate. Like I said, it may not happen for us this month. But it sure is nice to know that my body may be getting back into the swing of things. Of course, all of this could just be in my imagination and I'm still were I was before.

My RE always said I had a really good lining so I'm not really worried about the egg sticking when it gets there. I just want it to release and get there. I never knew I could get so excited over my body actually doing what it's supposed too. I just always took for granted it did.

I’m really happy for you!... and I was teasing about the head stand thing. I haven’t tried too long, so I don’t know anything about my lining, I know (or at least I think) I am ovulating just fine. I have all the symptoms of ovulation (without going into grimy details), I’ll get the OPK just because I want to make sure it’s ovulation and not some freaky thing my body is doing. Will keep on going, for my age, after 6 months of trying with no results, I might go to the docs and see what’s up with this. That will be in June, so I am hoping something will happen before that.

Funny though, how relieved I was in the past whenever I got my period, now it’s like such a big disappointment! But I’ll keep my chin up, and pray and hope for the best.

Yeah, I remember how I used to sit and hope AF would show up. Now it's so disappointing when it does. Don't get too discouraged if you do end up having to see an RE. There are more women out there who do then you can imagine. I didn't realize how many infertile couples there were out there. It's kinda nice to know you aren't the only one. Makes you wonder what is going on for there to be such an epidemic of infertility. Good luck and baby dust to everyone!

Ok... Just thought I'd give this thread a bump.

Haven't heard from any of you guys, and wanted to know how's the baby making thing going.

I guess that each month is like a clean sheet of paper, and if nothing happens you just start a new page...

I am certainly excited again at the possibility of expanding our little family. Like the saying goes... when a door closes another opens. With the sickness of my Mother in Law, I find myself thinking more and more, that we need to do this soon, because life is so short and things can just change so suddenly...

Hope this is a better baby making month for all of us...

Hugs...

Ana

Savanphil… CONGRATULATIONS!!! Its’ wonderful news! I know I will be scared also whenever I get pregnant, even if you’re trying it has to be scary! I guess like Tracy said, it’s supposed to be scary… (at first)… and please don’t worry about the things that can go wrong. I guess it’s also inevitable, but you have to think positive, because your little baby can feel all those emotions, and you don’t want him/her to be scared… right? So positive thoughts!! Feed happiness into that lil one growing inside you!

On the other hand, just wanted to let you girls know, that it’s a no-go for me this month. I am a bit saddened, but not overly upset. Looking at the positive side, I guess I don’t have to worry about that Bailey’s I had last weekend…:)

Ana

Awww, I hope it happens for you soon (L) Thank you for the possitive thoughts.

Congrats Savanaphil :luv::thumbs:
