What do you all do as far as keeping in touch with everyone back home while you're overseas? :help:

What I do, since I spend a lot of time in France, is I keep an unblocked cell phone with me when I travel. Since you have cingular, it would be super easy to unblock (meaning you can use any service, not just the cingular service)... it's pretty expensive to get cell phones unblocked in the US, but if you bring it to Egypt with you, I'm sure your husband can do it really quick and really cheap. Then you are able to buy a prepaid Egyptian SIM card and use it with your phone to call home. It also means that you have your own phone number in Egypt (which my family thought was a HUGE relief.. they knew they could contact ME anytime they needed to... even though they never actually called). I found that when I was in Algeria it was much cheaper to do this than call from a TaxiPhone or phone cabin usign a calling card. It cost me about 18 cents a minute and just a couple cents to text.

I saved my addresses to the phone before I did that . . . if you keep them on the sim card you won't have them available when you change cards.

I saved my addresses to the phone before I did that . . . if you keep them on the sim card you won't have them available when you change cards.

Catherine, how much did it cost per minute with the prepaid sim card? Usama uses the prepaid cards and it still costs well over $2 per minute. Maybe he's not going to the right place. That's why we only text and we save the conversations for when we get online.

Oh, I don't use the mobile in egypt to call back to the states except for a quick call as it is too expensive to call and talk, talk, talk. . . you are better off getting a calling card of some sort. I had one for awhile that you could use in egypt and the states.

hmmm, i am not seeing "egypt" listed as one of the places to "call from" . . . but you can get good rates from US to Egypt, lol!!

Can my digital camera and batteries come on the plane with me?

I have always taken my digital camera and batteries on the plane . . . The camera is one of those items that I would never pack in checked luggage. Besides, you might want to take some pix somewhere along the line while traveling . . . although I never remember to do it, hehe!

Which reminds me . . . I am going to go check Lufthansa's baggage and carry-on restrictions.

Anyone know about taking digi cams with memory cards and mp3 players through the security check at the airport? Will going through the x-ray thingy erase what's on them? My fiance told me to put it in the little bowl they give you so that they can pass it through without it being x-rayed or whatever but I have no idea. I'd hate to get on the plane with an all of a sudden empty mp3 player.

that little bowl goes through the x ray machine. They'll be fine though. Only need to worry about old fashioned cameras with real film in them.
