Hi

I need help on what to do, my husband filed his taxes this year with NrA for my Ssn.. This was because that's what we've read and because the embassy needed the latest taxes from him..

Was able to get approved and my visa is with me.

However irs returned his filing because of NRA..

What should we do? Please help!

Did your husband file Married Filing Separately? If so, the IRS tell you in Publication 17, page 22, middle column

Enter your spouse's full name and SSN or ITIN in the spaces provided. If your spouse does not have and is not required to have an SSN or ITIN, enter NRA in the space for your spouse's SSN. Use the Married filing separately column of the Tax Table or Section C of the Tax Computation Worksheet to figure your tax.

If he filed Married Filing Jointly then you require a SSN or ITIN. NRA doen't work on a joint return

SO how did he file?

Maybe it was for another reason. Did they mail a letter and a paper tax return back to him? Can you type the exact words they said as the reason for returning? Not what he thinks it said, but what the IRS said. Do you have a copy of the return to look at?

Did he do his own taxes. Did he use tax software? Which one? Did he try to efile and that was rejected? I can't guess what's wrong from what you have said. It could be lots of things. and you probably don't understand American taxes enough yet to know either.

Contact the IRS. They do not return tax forms for writing in NRA for your social security number. Many of us have used NRA for our spouses' SSN without problem.
