Awesome. I went to DMV a weeks ago and I applied for my California ID. Show my EAD, SSN and pay $28.00. Hopefully I will get my ID by this week.

I just checked the mail and I received my California ID. Took 2 weeks. YAY!

wow, thats fast!!! yaaaay! i went to apply for one this tuesday (the agent was very nice, cracked some Terminator and Star wars jokes), and he told me that i will get the card in 3-4 weeks

so next step: us driver's license)

Let me know how it goes with the DL...you wanna know a secret? :secret: (I can't drive ) but you better believe if there is a zombie attack I know the gas different from the brakes

Hi everyone! today I went to the DMV office and finally applied for my ID,I wasn't even prepared but I went there to ask for the requirements and fortunately had all the documents in had and got it the same day! super fast and easy, I just got the temporary ID but will receive the card in 2 weeks, one thing less on my list, now time to practice for my driver's license!

Avania glad you could get your SSN! Can't believe the agent didn't submit the application :ranting:but now you can work without a problem while waiting for the interview

Oh boy the long awaited interview :clock:

Waiting on SSN too, applied last Monday, was the same 3 - 4 weeks, but with the latest info from Avania, I would be happy to get it the week that starts tomorrow.

On a side note, I wanted to ask if it's true that when applying for a temporary DL, and you don't present a proof of previous driving history from your country, you might be asked to take some months course before you are eventually allowed to take the road test?

Kinda worried about this as I didn't come here with mine since it would have been expired whenever I decide to go back and also I never bothered getting the International DL.

Yea give it a shot and update us about ssn. My partner said with the DL it depends on what agreement your home country have with her. Some countries requires proof of previous driving history. You can check with your office to see what are the requirements.

shynepapin, the laws differ from state to state. in michigan, if you are over 18 and can't provide a proof of driving in another country - it's a 30 day waiting period after your written test until you can pass a driver's test. if you have one: the 30 day rule is waived

but 30 days is not that bad)

haha, avania, hopefully there will be no zombie attacks in near future, i dont want our AOS delayed cause of stupid zombies))

Allyalexandra, I'm in Michigan too and I did hear the same thing you said but been hearing some other controversial statements most recently that's why I needed to ask.

So 30 days it is again, and I would stand looking at my own car. One question, do you mean 30 days before I can take the drivers test or get the license, cos to get to the closest bus stop to and from work everyday it's 4 miles walk, geez.

this is what I found (it is true if you are more than 18 yo):

The Road Test

PRACTICE PERIOD: After you pass the written test and receive a temporary instruction permit, you are required to wait for a 30-day practice period before taking the road test. However, if you have in your possession a Driver's License from your country, the 30-day practice period will be waived. Your license must be translated into English by a translation service unless the parts of the license that list the name, date of birth, country of issue, issue date, type of license and expiration date are in English.

I still have my NZ DL. do I still have to do the driving test? I'm in California.

Whoa that's fast Avania, this things are definitely falling into your laps in cool and seemless timely manner. I still haven't got mine yet, applied previous week monday. Asked for a contact card and got one, but guess what the SSA official would not fill in her name or provide an extension number. Everytime I've called it has always been machine giving me prompts which needs one of the above details (agent names or parties ext.), so I've always hung up.

Most of all this gov't officials like to work with their own pace and wouldn't like to be hassled. It's the same here and where I'm from, and in most third world countries like they are called; only advantage here is a more controlled system is in place and an updated database to help make it easier. This lazy whimps can't work in countries where the old filing cabinets are still in place despite the use of computer, cos both info in either system has to be coherent.

No wonder they give extended dates, 3 - 4 weeks, 30 days or one month depending on the gov't agency and agent, all formats of those timeline are the same whichever the agents chooses to use is a personal perference and in place in regional officies. I kinda hate Michigan now with all this flawed regional Gov't agency preferred choice of rules. I can't still believe they close 3 or 2 hours ahead of what is the actual office hours on the website.

Hey Allyalexandra, I wanted to ask, do you think they would accept a scanned copy of my license in my country, those it expired before I travelled and I didn't bother renewing since I knew I was gonna leave soon, but my travelling ended being postponed for another year.

I got a contact card from the agent and he did put his name and window # on it. He told me to call him so he could tell me if the SSN was generated and if it was I should come in to get a copy. HOWEVER when I called the # the person who answered was a COMPLETE A-hole and basically sounded like she thought the agent was pulling a back door deal with me. She immediately started telling me he is not suppose to tell me anything over phone (even without me telling her what my issue was, all I said was I am calling to speak with him) She demanded to know what our conversation was about. I had to basically tell her that her previous LAZY A$$ agent did not submit my application and this poor guy was giving me exceptional service by going above and beyond to assist me so I didn't lose my job offer. I twisted a bunch of stories to save the poor guy from this A-wipe reporting him. She then placed me on hold and went to him then came back to tell me the guy said "it's clear" I was like ok then thank you have a great day then I went to the ssn office and saw him. He called me over and he gave a woman my passport and EAD (I am assuming this was the witch who demanded to know details). She was the one who looked my name up in the system and told him to write the # on a paper for me. I thanked him but wanted to give the lady the finger <_<
