Hello,

I am a late August filer and have a question about SSN as I saw most of you have applied for it: I have a social security card for 3 and a half years that I got on a J1 visa. As that type of visa is a non-immigrant one, I have the mention "Valid for work only with DHS autorization" on it. The woman at the city hall where we got married didn't even want to take it to write it on our marriage licence. I guess I will keep the same number once my AOS gets approved (so I don't think I need to apply for SSN) but I will definitely need a new card with a different status and my new name. For the people who have been in that case, what did you do?

AOS Timeline:
August 29, 2015: AOS package mailed to the USCIS in Chicago.
August 31, 2015: AOS package delivered.

September 18, 2015: Biometrics appointment letter received for October 1, 2015.
September 22, 2015: Biometrics done. Early walk-in at a different ASC.
September 30, 2015: Case is ready to be scheduled for an interview.
November 11, 2015: EAD card is being produced (Form I-765) and Form I-131 is approved.
November 12, 2015: Form I-765 is approved.

Bonjour FGr, et bienvenue!

The SSN is assigned only once per lifetime. So you will continue to use your assigned number. It will also be the same number once you get your green card, and citizenship too.

You're free to use it now while your AOS is pending, provided you have work authorization. If you don't have work authorization yet, you can still provide your number on applications (marriage license, credit cards, etc) without an issue, you just have to wait for your EAD to be approved before you can work.

Oh and I forgot to add also - your "valid for work only with DHS authorization" can't be removed with an EAD. You must wait for the green card.

Merci Cantofla ;) (Are you from French Canada?)

So, there shouldn't be any problem when I find a job and give my employer my SSC along with my EAD, right?

Ok got it, I didn't know that.

So, once I get my Green Card, I have to go to a social security office to get a new card, correct?

De rien. I'm from the border of Ontario-Quebec (so I grew up bilingual). Once your EAD comes in, you can just give that to your employer, with the SSN.

Once the green card comes, take that to the social security office and they'll update the immigration status.. I haven't done it myself (yet), but I know of someone who has and said it was a relatively straight forward procedure.

Yes, I just did it the other week. Take your greencard to the counter and tell them you need to update your resident status. They'll change it to permanent and the new card will not have the annotation once you get it in the mail.

As a side note though, the receipt they give you when you request the new card will still have a paragraph about how it won't be valid without DHS authorization, but the actual card you get in the mail will not have it.

ROC Timeline:

May 31: Package mailed

June 8: NOA1 received, dated June 2

June 27: Biometrics done

Sept 25: Case Status Update Card in Production

Hi Guys!

I received a RFE stating that my sponsor ( my husband) didn't meet the poverty line. We submitted our package based on his assets, since he was not working and it wasn't enough to USCIS. However, my huband got a job offer last week and will start his new job on October 01st. We will now reply the RFE explaining and sending the job offer letter to USCIS. DO you think would be enough? His new salary covers more than the poverty line.

Thank you!!

i got a referral for a similar situation like yours my wife was out of a job from June 2013 to June 2014 , but when we file she was in a new job for almost a year making enough to sponsor 5 person, but yet they said she was not making enough, so I just get a next sposor just to avoid exchanging letter with Uscis. So I went to get my state ID today. That was interesting to say the least. The guy at the DMV tried to tell me I can't get my ID with just the EAD, that I had to have my green card. I told him he needs to call someone because I know for sure that I can! He eventually did, and I did get my ID but oh my god was he mean and snotty! I mean I understand not everyone knows the whole UCSIS process and that's ok...but the snotty comments and how mean he was to me was totally uncalled for.
