Applied for AOS since we got married and she is on a F1

By 195 in Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from K1 and K3 Family Based Visas

We hired a lawyer to handle the process and complete the paperwork for us. The first step to the process was to get legally married up here since she was on her F1. After that and a medical exam, we signed all the necessary papers including and advanced parole and the papers were sent out yesterday. I will keep a rough timeline for you but here is some of the documents we needed for the lawyer to prepare everything:

- 4 passport photos of each of us

- my W2 and tax return for 2005

- copy of birth certificates from each of us (the firm handled all translations)

- medical exam results (called INS) in a sealed envelope

- official marriage certificate

- I-20 and I-94

- copies of both our passports

I'll keep you updated on how long this all takes! :)

AOS, AP:

02-09-07 - Legally Married

02-20-07 - AOS and AP mailed to Chicago

02-27-07 - NOA1

03-15-07 - Biometrics done

03-19-07 - AP Approved (AP was expedited. Emergency Advance Parole done at the immigration office)

03-26-07 - AOS Interview on 5/17

Advance Parole Approved in under 30 days.

Just under 90 days from AOS filing to AOS interview. Not bad! :)

Welcome and best wishes on your journey. It might be helpful to others on here who might be in your situation if you filled out a timeline with dates and such.

May I ask why you needed a lawyer? I have a couple of friends who recently got married and she is a F1 holder. Would you have some useful advice/tips I could tell them?

A lawyer is a good idea if you do not feel you can do the forms yourself... or there are area's of your case that could raise a red flag at interview or you want someone else to deal with all the paperwork...

Works for some people not for others...
