I applied for and received the passport the day AFTER my oath. I was first in line when they opened at the Chicago Passport Agency. My application was accepted at 9:09am, and the passport book & card were ready at 1:15pm. My naturalization certificate was returned at the same time.
I booked a trip to Canada for tomorrow, to comply with the policies of the office for same day service. I also made my appointment 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for the information. Since you are traveling you were eligible to apply at Chicago Passport agency. we do not have immediate plans for travel so I'd think we'll go to post office for regular application. But good to know of this option just in case.

Yes, and, of course they did. All that matters is that you can validate your claim upon a US passport at the time of your appointment. I actually had to raise my right hand and swear that I was entitled to a passport, upon the agent's request. You make no pronouncement or claim of citizenship while pressing numbers on the keypad for the appointment. As they are normally very busy, making your appointment 2 weeks in advance (when the calendar opens) it is the only way to gaurantee a slot of your choosing.

Yikes, wish I had known earlier! I waited until after my oath ceremony yesterday to make the appointment, but luckily they had one for 8:30 AM on Monday (I have a ticket to fly to Vancouver on Tuesday evening). I guess I was lucky to get an appointment at such short notice ... I was terrified that calling prior to my oath ceremony would constitute "claiming to be a US citizen" when I was not.

Yes, and, of course they did. All that matters is that you can validate your claim upon a US passport at the time of your appointment. Be sure to make a photocopy of your naturalization certificate, and front/back of your drivers license. They will keep the copies. I went ahead and got the passport card too, if only to have another document proving citizenship. Should my passport book ever be stolen, I can use the card to easily replace the book. I don't like the thought of being seperated from the certificate

Went to the passport agency this morning for my 8:30 appointment. They processed my application and said I could come back to pick up the passport tomorrow at 12 Noon. I was grateful for that because it meant I didn't have to hang around the cold and rainy downtown all day for a same-day pickup.

Strangely, they said they could not issue the Passport Card locally and that it will be mailed to my home from Tucson AZ. That's fine, as long as I have my passport in hand tomorrow the card can arrive later.
